Gophers' Second-Half Rally Leads to Third Win of the Season

11/16/2024 6:17:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Dawson Garcia led all players with 24 points, including 19 in the second half, and Brennan Rigsby added 15 points to help Minnesota (3-1) rally from a 10-point halftime deficit and defeat Yale, 59-56, at Williams Arena.

Garcia, who has scored 24 or more points in all four games this season, was 6-of-17 from the field, including 2-of-4 from three-point range and was 10-of-12 at the line. He added six rebounds, two assists, and two steals for the Gophers. Rigsby was 5-of-10 from the field and 4-of-7 at the line, while also pulling down six boards. Lu'Cye Patterson finished with seven points and a game-high six assists, while Frank Mitchell grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to go with four points, and Femi Odukale had five points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a pair of blocked shots.

Minnesota made 20-of-55 (.364) field goals, including just 3-of-17 (.176) three-pointers, but were 16-of-26 (.615) at the free throw line, where they outscored Yale by seven. The Bulldogs (2-3), who lost by eight points at Purdue earlier this week, were paced by 21 points and six rebounds from John Poulakidas and 11 points and seven boards from Isaac Celiscar. The Gophers forced 14 Yale turnovers, while committing just three, and held a 15-2 advantage in points off turnovers. Minnesota limited Yale to 9-of-25 (.360) field goals in the decisive second half, including 3-of-8 three-point attempts, and held the Bulldogs to their lowest point total of the season (previous low had been 79 points).

The Gophers used a 7-0 run to build an early 7-2 advantage. Rigsby opened the scoring with a reverse layup, followed by a three-pointer from Garcia, and a driving bank shot by Rigsby. Yale countered with an 11-0 run during a six-minute, 22-second scoring drought for Minnesota, before a layup by Mitchell pulled the Gophers to within 13-9. The Bulldogs scored five-straight to extend their run to 16-2, putting them up 18-9. Garcia's layup cut the deficit to 18-11 with 8:46 remaining in the half, but Yale extended its lead to 14 during a six-minute, five-second scoring drought for the Gophers. Patterson's jumper with 2:41 left ended the drought, layups by Rigsby and Fox pulled Minnesota within 26-17, and a pair of free throws by Rigsby sent the Gophers to the locker room trailing 29-19.

Rigsby led Minnesota with eight first-half points, and Garcia added five points. For the second straight game, the Gophers struggled from the field in the opening half, making just 8-of-27 (.296) attempts, including 1-of-10 three-pointers. Yale made 11-of-20 (.550) field goals, including 4-of-6 from long-range, and the Bulldogs held a 19-13 rebounding advantage. John Poulakidas with 10 points at the break.

Minnesota opened the second half with an 11-3 run, including nine-straight, to cut Yale's lead to 32-30 with 16:29 remaining. Rigsby keyed the run with five points, and four different players scored. Yale extended its lead back to 38-32, but Garcia scored on a runner in the lane and a step-back three-pointer to cut the deficit to one point, and Odukale's layup on an assist from Patterson gave Minnesota a 39-38 lead, its first since having a 7-6 edge early in the first half. The Bulldogs went on an 8-3 run to retake a 47-44 lead, but free throws by Garcia and Rigsby and a putback layup by Mitchell helped the Gophers regain a 48-47 lead with 5:57 left. A Yale three-pointer once again gave the Bulldogs the lead, but Garcia's jumper and pair of free throws with 3:45 left put the Gophers up 52-50. Patterson's baseline floater gave the Gophers a four-point edge, but the Bulldogs drained a three to cut it to 54-53. Odukale hit the first of two free throw attempts to put Minnesota up by a pair, and the Gophers forced a turnover at the other end, and Garcia knocked down a pair of free throws with 18.7 seconds left to make it 57-53. Garcia added two more free throws with 2.1 seconds left, making him 20-of-22 (.909) at the line over the past two games, and Minnesota secured its third win of the season.
