Shaffmaster's Double Double Leads 'U' in Sweep Over Iowa

The Gophers clinched their 10th straight winning season in the Big Ten
MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 16 Minnesota volleyball team defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes in three sets (25-20, 25-18, 25-12) on Saturday night at Maturi Pavilion. Minnesota has now beaten Iowa 49 straight times.
"I think we battled and I was really proud of us when we started slow in the second set," said associate head coach Kristen Kelsay. "To be able to regain our composure and come out of that was great. We then came out hot in the third set and were able to put the game away."
Julia Hanson led the Gophers with 15 kills while Melani Shaffmaster went for 28 assists and 11 digs. Zeynep Palabiyik paced the defense with 15 digs.
The Gophers (18-10, 11-7 Big Ten) hit .214 for the night and held Iowa to just .009, the lowest total of any opponent its faced in conference play.
Michelle Urquhart led Iowa (10-20, 4-14 B1G) with nine kills and nine digs while Claire Ammeraal tallied a double-double with 16 assists and 10 digs.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Gophers started strong, posting six of the first eight points to take an early lead. Aces from Acevedo and Grote combined with three kills got the home team going. UI would cut the lead to two at 8-6 before a kill from Awoleye and two attacking errors made it 11-6, Minnesota, leading to a Hawkeyes timeout. Iowa would respond with three kills and an ace to cut the lead to one at 11-10. The Gophers called a timeout after the 4-0 spurt. A 3-0 run helped the Gophers go up four again at 14-10. The Hawkeyes would get as close as two at 17-15 before a kill from Minatee, ace from Grote and kill from Hanson put the 'U' up 20-15, leading to another timeout from the visitors. UI would get as close as three at 21-18 before Minnesota ended on a 4-2 run to win set one. 25-20. Hanson had five kills while Shaffmaster posted 10 assists and six digs.
SET 2 | Iowa came out as the aggressor in set two, scoring five of the first before Minnesota called a timeout. Minnesota would bounce back by scoring three of the next four after the break to make it 6-4. The Gophers would cut it to 7-6 after kills from Hanson and Wucherer before two more from the Hawkeyes put the visitors up three again. A 4-0 spurt from the 'U', led by three kills from Wucherer, put the Gophers up 10-9, giving the home team their first lead of the set. The lead wouldn't last long as UI got two kills and two blocks as part of a 6-2 run to go up 15-12. A 4-0 response from the 'U' put the home team up 16-15, forcing Iowa's second timeout of the frame. UI would tie it up at 16 after an attacking error from Minnesota. It was all Gophers after that as they exploded on a 9-2 run to win, 25-18.
SET 3 | Minnesota came out firing once again in set three, scoring eight of the first 11 to go up 8-3. Minatee and Grote tallied kills before Hanson posted consecutive aces, leading to a Hawkeyes timeout. The Gophers would keep up the pressure, going up by as many as nine at 15-6 before UI called its final timeout of the set. A kill by Grote and two Iowa attacking errors made it 18-6, giving Minnesota full control of the frame. The 'U' would go up by as many as 13 at 22-9 before a trio of Hawkeyes points cut it to 10. A kill from Hanson, a block from Minatee and Shaffmater and an attacking error ended the set, with Minnesota winning 25-12 for the sweep.
