Furious Fourth Set Rally Helps 'U' Close Out Illinois

11/27/2024 9:36:00 PM | Volleyball

The Gophers trailed 18-10 in the fourth set before coming back

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The No. 15 Minnesota volleyball team rallied to take down the Illinois Fighting Illini in four sets (20-25, 25-18, 25-22, 27-25) on Wednesday night at Huff Hall. It was Minnesota's 10th straight win in the series against Illinois.

Minnesota executed a furious comeback to get back in the match and take down the Illini in the fourth set. The Gophers trailed 16-6 before finishing on a 21-9 run to earn the win. The 'U' also trailed 18-13 in set three before a late 7-0 spurt helped it gain control.

"People, values, volleyball," said head coach Keegan Cook. "I told our team when we were down in the fourth set, that how we finish the set is going to say a lot about us. It didn't necessarily mean winning it, but I loved the way we responded. Illinois is a very good team and we're happy to get the win tonight."

Julia Hanson led the Gophers with 22 kills and seven digs while Melani Shaffmaster went for 35 assists, seven digs and six kills. Phoebe Awoleye (10 blocks) and Zeynep Palabiyik (15 digs) paced the defense.

The Gophers (19-10, 12-7 Big Ten) hit .281 for the night with 55 kills while Illinois (18-11, 10-9 B1G) hit .197 with 53 kills.

Raina Terry paced Illinois with 20 kills and six digs while Brooke Mosher went for 42 assists and nine digs. Christina Martinez Mundo tallied six service aces to go with 10 digs.

The Illini would score two more to cap off a 6-0 run before the 'U' scored again. The Gophers would get as close as five at 16-11 after a Grote kill and a Palabiyik ace, but four out of five after that put UI up 20-12.
