SCSU Scores Twice in Third to Upset No. 3 Gophers

11/23/2024 5:37:00 PM | Women's Hockey

The No. 3 University of Minnesota women's hockey team fell, 3-1, to No. 10 St. Cloud State tonight at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.

The loss snaps a seven-game win streak for the Gophers, who are now 11-4-1 overall and 7-4-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. SCSU improves to 9-5-2 overall and 5-5-2 in WCHA action.

Despite a 23-8 Gopher shot advantage, both teams went scoreless in the first period. SCSU's Abby Promersberger broke the scoreless tie when she added her fourth goal of the year at 9:24 in the second period and took a 1-0 lead into the third.

The Huskies cushioned their lead scoring two goals within 1:20 of each other. Brieja Parent scored a goal glove side for her third goal of the year just 1:49 into the third period for the eventual gamewinner. Avery Farrell added a goal stick side at 3:09 to take a 3-0 lead.

Minnesota responded when Natalie Mlynkova scored her seventh goal of the season at 6:27 when she placed the puck over the glove of SCSU goalie Sani Ahola to cut the deficit to two. Ava Lindsay and Peyton Hemp assisted on the goal, their fifth and sixth assists of the season.

The two goals in the third, however, would be all that the Huskies would need to earn the upset. Minnesota's last loss to SCSU dates back to Nov. 7, 2022 when the Gophers fell, 4-1, at the 2022 U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Museum at Andover Community Center.

Hannah Clark had 225 saves, while Sanni Ahola added 38 and was the first star of the game. The Gophers out shot the Huskies, 39-28, and both teams went scoreless during the power-play.
