Dawson Garcia recorded a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds, Lu'Cye Patterson made four three-pointers and added a season-high 19 points, and Minnesota (5-1) defeated Central Michigan, 68-65, for its third-straight win at Williams Arena.
Garcia, who has scored 22 or more points in five of six games this season, finished 6-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-5 from three-point range, and 7-of-11 at the free throw line. His season-high 11 rebounds earned him his 12th career point-rebound double-double (his eighth at Minnesota). Garcia has had multiple three-pointers in four of his six games this year and has started the season 11-of-20 (.550) from beyond the arc.
Patterson had his best game in his first season as a Gopher, going 4-of-9 from long-range as part of his 19-point effort, while also four rebounds and three assists. Frank Mitchell finished with eight points, six rebounds, three assists, and two blocked shots, Isaac Asuma had six points, six rebounds, and six assists, Parker Fox had six points, and Kadyn Betts added five points.
Minnesota ended the night 23-of-54 (.444) from the field, including 10-of-27 (.370) from long-range, and 10-of-17 at the line. Central Michigan (3-3) was 26-of-62 (.419) overall, including 7-of-24 (.292) from three-point range, and 6-of-10 at the line, while holding a 36-34 rebounding edge. Ugnius Jarusevicius led the Chippewas with 17 points, and Jakobi Heady added a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Central Michigan grabbed an early 4-0 lead, but Mitchell got the Gophers going with a pair of layups and Garcia hit a three-pointer for a 7-0 run and a three point lead at the first media timeout. Garcia added a runner in the lane, Patterson knocked down a three, and Fox drove baseline for a reverse layup to extend Minnesota's run to 14-0 and give the Gophers a 10-point advantage with 12:46 remaining. The Chippewas battled back with a 7-3 run, with Betts hitting a three-pointer for the Gophers, and Minnesota led 17-11. A layup by Betts kept the Gophers in front, 21-16, but CMU proceeded to go on a 9-0 run during an almost four-minute scoring drought for the Gophers before Garcia drained a long three to cut it to 25-24. CMU built a 30-26 lead, but back-to-back threes by Asuma tied the score at 32-32 and a dunk by Femi Odukale put Minnesota back in front by two, and the teams went to the locker room deadlocked at 34-34.
Garcia led Minnesota at the half with eight points and four rebounds, while Asuma and Mitchell each had six points and four boards. The Gophers made 13-of-28 (.464) field goals, including 6-of-15 (.400) from behind the three-point arc, but were just 2-of-6 at the free throw line. Patterson's second three-pointer of the game made it 41-39 Gophers, and after CMU regained a 43-41 edge, back-to-back dunks by Fox put Minnesota up by a pair. CMU's 4-0 run put it back in the lead, 47-45, but Patterson scored five points, including his third three to make it a 50-49 lead for Minnesota. CMU reclaimed a 53-50 lead, forcing Minnesota head coach Ben Johnson to call a timeout, and the Gophers responded with a layup from Garcia and a runner in the lane by Patterson for the 11th lead change of the game. A CMU layup with 6:26 gave the Chippewas the lead, 55-54, but a Mitchell layup and a trey by Garcia put the Gophers up 59-55. The Chippewas cut the lead to one point, but Patterson's fourth three-pointer made it 62-58 with 1:49 left. CMU pulled within 62-60, but four free throws from Garcia made it a six-point lead.
