11/28/2024 2:32:00 PM | Men's Basketball

The University of Minnesota men's basketball program fell in a 68-66 overtime heartbreaker to Wichita State, today in Orlando, Fla., in the first game of the ESPN Events Invitational. With the loss, the Golden Gophers (5-2) will play in the third-place game, set tomorrow at noon CT/1 p.m. ET. They will play Wake Forest, who lost to Florida, 75-58,. WSU, now 6-0, plays Florida at 2:30 p.m. CT/3:30 p.m. ET.

Minnesota had four individuals in double-digit points. Lu'Cye Patterson had a team-best 14 points, followed by Femi Odukale with a Minnesota-best 13 points and eight assists, while Parker Fox added 12 and Frank Mitchell chipped in a Minnesota-best 10 points. Isaac Asuma had a team-best 10 rebounds. Wichita State also had four in double-digit scoring, including Harlond Beverly, who had a game-best 16 points, including a three-pointer to send the game into overtime.
As a team, Minnesota shot 41.5 percent from the field, while WSU shot 45 percent. Both teams had 27 field goals, while WSU had a 4-3 lead in three-pointers. Minnesota outrebounded the Shockers, 38-34, as both teams committed 12 turnovers.

Minnesota was down 25-24 after the first half. Trailing 13-17, Minnesota went on a 7-0 run to take a 22-19 lead with 4:06 remaining in the first half after an Asuma three-pointer and a Patterson second-chance putback. WSU tied the game at 24-24 off a three-point play at 1:40 left and took a one-point lead with 1:04 remaining in the first and the eventual halftime score.

The Shockers jumped out to a 37-33 lead out of the break, but Minnesota fought back and tied the game at 39-39 off a Odukale drive through the paint. Tied again at 47-47, Minnesota would take a three-point lead at 54-50 off a Patterson three-pointer and a 55-50 lead off an Odukale free throw. WSU responded with back-to-back field goals to cut the Gopher lead to 55-54. Asuma made both his free throws as the Gophers held a 57-54 lead, however, Harlond scored a three-pointer with a second left on the clock to send into overtime.

Despite the Shockers having a 64-59 overtime lead, Minnesota chipped away and tied the game at 66-66. However, WSU's Justin Hill was fouled and sunk both free throws to win the game. Minnesota attempted a three to win it at the buzzer, but it clanked off the rim for the 68-66 Shocker win.
