11/29/2024 2:55:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Lu'Cye Patterson and Isaac Asuma led the team with 12 and 11 points, but the University of Minnesota fell to Wake Forest, 57-51, today to conclude the ESPN Events Invitational in Kissimmee, Fla. With the loss, the Golden Gophers fall to 5-3 this season, while Wake Forest improves to 7-2.
Patterson produced his third-straight double-digit game, while Asuma added a collegiate best 11 points. Patterson had 19 points against Central Michigan, 14 against Wichita State and 12 against Wake Forest. Asuma went 4-of-6, including 2-of-3 from three, a rebound, three steals, and a block, to record his second double-digit point game of his young Gopher career. Dawson Garcia had eight points, while Femi Odukale had seven and Trey Edmonds had six.
Minnesota took a 29-27 lead at the half after a back and forth first. Despite Wake Forest taking a 4-0 lead, Minnesota took a 9-6 lead off an Odukale three-pointer at 14:36. Patterson put the game at 15-10 when he scored off a turnover at 11:23. The Demon Deacons, however, tied the game at 19-19 off a dunk and a 21-19 lead at 5:43. However, Edmonds contributed back-to-back buckets for a 23-21 lead. The two teams traded points until both were tied at 27. With two seconds left in the half, Patterson added his fourth basket of the half and a 29-27 lead.
Wake Forest responded out of the break and took a 38-33 lead, forcing Minnesota to call a timeout. Minnesota cut the Demon Deacon lead to one after a 6-0 run for a 48-47 Wake Forest lead. The Gophers forced three turnovers in that span. After a steal from Asuma, Patterson found Parker Fox for a dunk and it forced the WF to call a timeout. The Demon Deacons, however, pushed the lead back to five off a layup and a pair of free throws.
The Gophers have a quick turnaround and are back in action on Sunday, Dec. 1 when it hosts Bethune-Cookman. Game time is set for 2 p.m., and streamed on B1G+.
