• The Golden Gophers play in the third-place game against Wake Forest, Friday at 12 p.m. CT/1 p.m. ET at the ESPN Events Invitational in Orlando, Fla. The Golden Gophers and Demon Deacons both fell in the opening game Thursday. The 2024 tournament is Minnesota's third time in an Orlando nonconference tournament and the first since 2011. Now known as the ESPN Events Invitational, the Gophers played in the previously-named Old Spice Classic in 2011 and 2006.
• Friday's match up marks the eighth time in school history the two teams will meet up and the first time on a neutral court since 1955. Minnesota played at Wake Forest in 2014 when it earned a 84-69 road win as a part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. In 2006, Minnesota  played Wake Forest in the NIT, where the Gophers won the home game, 73-58. The Gophers and Deacons played each other at the Dixie Classic in Raleigh, N.C., in 1955 as the Deacons won, 87-83 in overtime. Â
• Minnesota is looking to return to the win column after a 68-66 overtime heartbreaking loss to Wichita State Thursday. Minnesota had four individuals in double-digit points. Lu'Cye Patterson had a team-best 14 points, followed by Femi Odukale with a Minnesota-best 13 points and eight assists, while Parker Fox added 12 and Frank Mitchell chipped in a Minnesota-best 10 points. Isaac Asuma had a team-best 10 rebounds. Wichita State also had four in double-digit scoring, including Harlond Beverly, who had a game-best 16 points, including a three-pointer to send the game into overtime.
• Minnesota played in an overtime game against Wichita State Thursday. The last time the Gophers played in an overtime game was Feb, 3, 2024 in an overtime win against Northwestern. The last time the Gophers lost an overtime game was Jan. 7, 2023 vs. Nebraska (81-79).Â
SCOUTING THE DEMON DEACONS
• Wake Forest is 6-2 this season, dropping a contest Thursday to Florida and a 75-60 loss to Xavier. The Gopher game marks the second Big Ten team the Demon Deacons play this season after a 72-70 win over the Wolverines in Greensboro, N.C.Â
• Slated to finish third in the ACC this year, Hunter Sallis was named a Preseason All-ACC selection and averages a team-best 18.4 points and 50 field goals and 147 points. Cameron Hildreth averages 11.5 and a team-high 33 assists and 15 steals, while Tre'von Spillers averages 9.0 rebounds a game and 10.3 ppg. Davin Cosby has  a team-best 18 threes.Â
• As a team, the Demon Deacons average 71 points and allow 67. They are shooting 43.2 from the field and 27.8 from beyond the arc. Â
