No. 14 Minnesota Humbled at Home by Huskies
11/7/2024 9:40:00 PM | Volleyball
Minnesota had 16 blocks but gave up 13 service aces
MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 14 Minnesota volleyball team fell to the Washington Huskies in four sets (21-25, 23-25, 25-14, 22-25) on Thursday evening at Maturi Pavilion. The loss ends a four-match winning streak for Minnesota.
"It's one of those box scores that will confuse you for a while," said head coach Keegan Cook. "To outhit a team by almost double their hitting percentage and certainly block at a high level – but the game is won and lost in serve receive. Certainly, there were things late in the match that I was familiar with, and that was Washington at their best."
The Gophers (16-7, 9-4 Big Ten) hit .248 for the night and had 16 blocks, but allowed 13 aces from the Huskies. UW hit just .123 for the evening and had 10 blocks.
Julia Hanson led the Gophers with 15 kills while Mckenna Wucherer had 12 kills and 11 digs. Phoebe Awoleye led the defense with eight blocks of her own. Melani Shaffmaster paced the offense with 39 assists, 10 digs, five blocks and four kills.
Emoni Bush led Washington (18-5, 8-5 Big Ten) with 19 kills and 12 digs while Molly Wilson had 37 assists, 15 digs and four blocks.

The Dawgs would respond by scoring five of the next seven to tie it at 19-19, forcing a Minnesota timeout. A kill by Hanson put the 'U' up 20-19 before three UW points put the visitors up 22-20, leading to another timeout from coach Cook.
