Minnesota Falls to No. 25 Nebraska on the Road

The Gophers return to Williams Arena on Wednesday night
LINCOLN, Neb. - The Minnesota women's basketball team (10-1, 0-1 Big Ten) had 11 fewer turnovers than Nebraska, but fell 84-65 to the Cornhuskers (8-1, 1-0 Big Ten) on the road Sunday.
The Golden Gophers had four players score in double figures, led by Mallory Heyer, who had 12 points and eight rebounds. Tori McKinney tacked on 11 points and two steals while Alexsia Rose and Grace Grocholski helped out with 10 points.
Minnesota did an excellent job taking care of the basketball, dishing out 10 assists while turning the ball over four times. McKinney's three assists led the distribution list for the Gophers. Alexsia Rose also added with three assists of her own.
Minnesota forced 15 Nebraska turnovers while committing just four themselves in Sunday's game. The Gophers turned those takeaways into 15 points on the offensive end of the floor. Taylor Woodson led the way individually with four steals.
How It Happened
Minnesota struggled out of the gate, falling behind 27-11 at the end of the first quarter.
The Gophers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 36-19 halftime deficit.
Minnesota's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Gophers faced a 59-38 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Minnesota played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 19 points in the paint.
Nebraska kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 78-52 advantage before Minnesota went on a 6-0 run to shrink the deficit to 78-58 with 1:59 to go in the contest. The Golden Gophers kept their comeback going, but Nebraska managed to hold on for the 84-65 win. Minnesota took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 16 of its 27 points in the paint.
