32 NCAA players nominated for Tim Taylor Award
MINNEAPOLIS - Oliver Moore and Sam Rinzel representing the Minnesota men's hockey team were named to the 2024 Tim Taylor Award watch list by the Hockey Commissioners Association Thursday.
A total of 32 first-year NCAA men's hockey players were nominated for the honor and one of the talented rookies will receive the title as National Rookie of the Year as voted by the nation's assistant coaches.
Moore leads all Golden Gophers forwards with 19 assists and has tallied six goals for 25 total points in his first collegiate campaign, ranking 11th nationally in rookie scoring. He has 13 points during a career-long, seven-game point streak, tying the longest streak by a Minnesota skater all year. The Mounds View, Minn., native was named the Big Ten Conference Second Star of the Week (Jan. 30) with three goals and an assist in a road split at league-leading Michigan State. Moore scored his first B1G goal in the series opener versus the Spartans (Jan. 26) before registering the first multi-goal effort of his career to close the weekend and has goals in back-to-back games for the first time as a Gopher. He also leads the Maroon and Gold behind a plus-17 rating and is a plus-11 over the last seven contests.
Rinzel has been a driving force for Minnesota's offense and leads the team with 22 assists from the blue line, which ranks third among NCAA freshmen. He's recorded seven multi-assist performances during the season, including three games with a career-best three points. All three of those outings came in his five-game scoring streak between Jan. 8-20 and he posted 12 helpers in that span. A native of Chanhassen, Minn., Rinzel landed the first Big Ten Conference weekly award of his career when he was named the Third Star of the Week (Jan. 16) thanks to a four-point weekend in the Gophers' sweep of Robert Morris. The rookie is tied for second on the team with a plus-11 rating aided by a career-high plus-4 outing versus nationally-ranked Colorado College (Jan. 8).
This year's Tim Taylor Award winner will be announced during the NCAA Frozen Four in St. Paul, Minn., in April.
