FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Minnesota Gophers (2-2) head to Florida to take on the Twins in an exhibition game, followed by the Northeastern Huskies (1-2) for a two-game series. Game one against Northeastern will be at Jet Blue Park while game two will be at Lee Health Sports Complex. There will be no live stream available for any of the games, but fans can follow along with live stats at GopherSports.com.

Last Time Out
The Gophers opened the season at the Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic in Surprise, Ariz. The Maroon and Gold won a 12-inning thriller on opening night over CSU Bakersfield before picking up an 11-2 win over New Mexico on Sunday. Minnesota went 2-2 for the weekend with their only losses coming twice to No. 7 Oregon State. 

Battle of Minnesota Baseball
-The Minnesota Gophers will open their weekend in Fort Myers with an exhibition game against the Minnesota Twins. The Twins won the American League Central in 2023 with a record of 87-75. 
-The team began their spring training workouts on Feb. 18 and will face the Gophers before competing against the Pittsburgh Pirates in their first official spring training game.

Anderson's Final Ride
-The 2024 season will be head coach John Anderson's 43rd and final year leading the Gophers. He announced in December that he will retire at the conclusion of the season. 
-Anderson has led Minnesota to 11 Big Ten titles and have made the NCAA Tournament 19 times. He is an eight-time Big Ten Coach of the Year honoree and was named Mideast Region Coach of the Year three times.
-Anderson's career began as a player for the Gophers in 1974 before he became a student assistant from 1976-77 and graduate assistant in 1978. From 1979-81, he served as an assistant coach before being hired as the head coach in '81.

Scouting Northeastern
-The Huskies went 44-16 in 2023, making it to the regional round of the NCAA Tournament. -They kicked off the 2024 season with a three game series at the University of Arizona in Tuscon, finishing with a 1-2 record. 
-Senior Luke Beckstein led the offense in the opening weekend for Northeasten, going 6-12 with two RBI and three runs. Graduate senior Alex Lane hit the lone home run for the Huskies over the weeknd. He went 5-12 with two doubles, a homer, two RBI and two runs scored.
-Northeastern will take on the Boston Red Sox in an exhibition on Friday before facing the Gophers.

History with Northeastern - In Fort Myers
-Minnesota has faced Northeastern twice in its history, with the last coming in 2022. The Gophers are 2-0 all time against the Huskies, winning 3-1 on Feb. 25, 2022 in Fort Myers.
-The Gophers have played seven games in Fort Myers, Fla. in the past two seasons. In those seven games, Minnesota is 1-6 with their lone win coming to Northeastern in 2022. The 'U' faced off against Saint Louis University in 2023 at Bill Smith Field.

Success at the Top of the Order
-Brady Counsell collected five hits over the weekend, including leadoff hits in the Gophers' first three games. He tallied three walks and scored five runs while reaching safely in every game.
-Boston Merila also reached base safely in each of the first for games for the Maroon and Gold. He drove in four runs and scored five while slashing .313/.381/.438.

Patience at the Plate
-The Gophers drew 37 walks over their first four games compared to 18 by their opponents.
-The team is tied for seventh in the nation in the statistic.
-The 'U' got on base at a .407 clip, collecting 33 hits, 37 walks and seven hit by pitches.

Newcomers Play Key Roles in Opening Weekend    
-Transfer Justin Thorsteinson pitched 4.0 innings in relief, allowing just one run on one hit with six strikeouts en route to a save against New Mexico. 
-Transfer senior Tommy Gross pitched 5.1 innings over two games, striking out five batters.
-Freshmen Charlie Sutherland and Jack Taxdahl each picked up a hit and RBI in their first career games.
-Freshman pitchers Tyler Hemmesch and Kyle Remington also made their debuts. Hemmesch pitched 3.0 shutout innings against No. 7 Oregon State, striking out three and allowing just one hit. Remington pitched 5.0 innings over two games, striking out four and walking just one batter.

Perry Performs in First Four Games
-Junior Jake Perry had a stellar opening weekend. Starting all four games at third base, he slashed .313/.476/.563 with two RBI and two runs scored.
-Perry also drew four walks and had three extra-base hits (two 2B, one 3B). 
-The Hopkins, Minn. native also played a clean third base, registering 12 assists and one putout without an error.

On the Road Again
-Without the availability of U.S. Bank Stadium due to turf replacement, the Gophers will play their first 22 games of the year on the road.
-Minnesota's first home game is scheduled for April 2 against South Dakota State.

What's on Deck
Minnesota will head back out west for a 10-day road trip to California and Washington. The Gophers will make stops in Sacramento, Calif., Stockton, Calif. and Spokane, Wash. They are slated to face Pacific (Mar. 1, 4), Sacramento State (Mar. 2-3) and Gonzaga (Mar. 7-9).
