Gophers Fall at Huskers

2/25/2024 7:59:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Cam Christie led the team with 14 points, Dawson Garcia had 10 points and eight rebounds, and Parker Fox came off the bench to finish with eight points and a team-high nine rebounds, but Minnesota (17-10, 8-8 Big Ten) fell 73-55 to Nebraska (20-8, 10-7) at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The Huskers also improve to 17-1 at home, including an unblemished 9-0 in league play.

Minnesota jumped out to a 5-0 start on a layup by Elijah Hawkins and a three-pointer from the right corner by Garcia, moving him past 1,300 career points. The Huskers responded with a 7-0 run to take the lead, but Hawkins added another layup and Fox scored on a short floater for a 9-7 lead. A 5-0 Huskers run put them up 12-9, but Hawkins drove the lane, scoring on a layup while being fouled and then made the free throw to tie the score. Nebraska used a 14-2 run to open a 26-14 lead, but Fox ended the Gophers' drought with a dunk, a layup, and a dunk on three straight possessions to cut the deficit to 26-20, and the Huskers took a 28-20 lead to the locker room. Fox led Minnesota with eight points and six rebounds, while Hawkins had seven points. The Gophers made just 9-of-32 (.281) field goals, including 1-of-11 (.091) three-pointers.

A three-pointer by Mike Mitchell Jr., just the second of the game for the Gophers, cut Nebraska's lead to 33-25, but the Huskers answered with a 10-1 run to take a 17-point lead at 43-26. The Huskers expanded the lead to 47-28, but Christie scored the Gophers' next seven points to pull them within 52-35. Trailing 59-38, Mitchell Jr. came up with a steal and knocked down a transition three, followed by a fast-break layup and three-point play from Christie to cut the deficit to 59-44 with 8:25 left. But the Gophers were unable to get any closer, as Huskers three-pointers on three-straight possessions helped expand the lead back to 21.

Hawkins ended the game with nine points, four rebounds, and two assists, while Mitchell Jr. had eight points, and Pharrel Payne added six rebounds and three points.

Minnesota travels to Champaign, Ill., for an 8 p.m. tip-off vs. No. 12 Illinois on Wednesday, Feb. 28. The game will be televised on Big Ten Network and broadcast on 100.3 FM.
