Christie's 19 Points Leads Gophers Over Spartans
2/6/2024 11:22:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Cam Christie scored 14 of his team-high 19 points in the second half, leading Minnesota (15-7, 6-5 Big Ten) to its third-straight Big Ten win, as the Gophers rallied from a nine-point deficit to defeat Michigan State 59-56 at Williams Arena.
Christie made 5-of-8 field goals, including 5-of-7 from three-point range, and added six rebounds. His older brother, Max, played for Michigan State before moving on to the Los Angeles Lakers. Dawson Garcia added 10 points, Pharrel Payne had eight points and a team-best seven rebounds, Parker Fox came off the bench for eight points and four boards, and Elijah Hawkins finished with six points and six assists for the Gophers. Minnesota won three-straight conference games for the second time this season, and snapped a three-game losing streak versus the Spartans (14-9, 6-6 B1G). The last time the Gophers won three-consecutive Big Ten games (with no non-conference games in between) was when they won eight-straight from Feb. 4 to March 2, 2017.
The Spartans opened the game with a 5-0 lead, as the Gophers missed their first three field goals of the night. Minnesota responded by making four of its next five to cut MSU's lead to 10-9, and a three-pointer from Christie gave the Gophers their first lead at 12-10. A layup by Fox and a three from the left wing by Braeden Carrington stretched the Minnesota lead to 17-12 and a three-point play by Fox put the Gophers up 20-13 with 10:16 on the clock. The Spartans fought back with an 11-2 run to retake a 24-22 lead with 3:53 remaining. Christie made two free throws to tie it at 24-24, and a right corner trey by Mike Mitchell Jr. knotted the score at 27-all with 2:58 left, but MSU took a 32-27 lead to the locker room. Fox led the Gophers with seven points at the break, while Christie and Mitchell Jr. each had five points.
Michigan State expanded its lead to seven points to open the second half, but a short jumper in the lane by Garcia and a three-pointer by Christie pulled Minnesota within 34-32. An 11-4 run by MSU gave the Spartans their largest lead of the night at 45-36, but Fox hit a free throw and Christie connected on a three from the top of the key to cut it to 45-40. Christie knocked down another trey to pull the Gophers within two, and a Hawkins floater in the lane made it an 11-0 run and tied the score with 8:48 left before Payne made a free throw to give the Gophers their first lead since 22-20. Minnesota's defense held MSU to nine-straight missed field goals during the 12-0 run. A 5-2 MSU run put the Spartans back up by two, but Christie drained his fourth three-pointer of the second half to give Minnesota a 51-50 edge at the final media timeout. With the game tied at 52-52 and the shot clock winding down, Garcia connected on his first three of the game to reached double-figures and put Minnesota up 55-52 with 1:27 left. The Spartans pulled within one on a pair of free throws with 0:20 remaining, but the third attempt missed and Christie was fouled with 18.5 seconds to go. He stepped to the line and made both shots to give him 19 points and put the Gophers up 57-54. Hawkins then added two free throws with 0:06 left to seal the 59-56 victory.
As a team, the Gophers were 9-of-17 (.529) from the field in the second half, including 5-of-9 (.556) from three-point range. Minnesota finished with a 31-28 edge in rebounding.
Minnesota's next two games are on the road, beginning with a trip to Iowa for a 2:00 p.m. CDT tipoff on Sunday, Feb. 11, on Big Ten Network.
