The University of Minnesota men's basketball team had four individuals receive postseason All-Big Ten recognition, announced today by the league office. Dawson Garcia was named Second Team All-Big Ten by the Media and Third Team by the coaches, while Elijah Hawkins was Big Ten Honorable Mention in both categories. Cam Christie was named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team, while Parker Fox received Minnesota's Sportsmanship Award.Â
A junior forward, Garcia landed a spot on an All-Big Ten team after receiving Honorable Mention accolades a year ago. He led the Golden Gophers in points (495), points per game (17.7), rebounds (187), rebounds per game (6.7), free throws attempted (168), free throws made (137) and free throw percentage (.815). Garcia ranks second on the team in minutes played, averaging 31.9, has started in all 28 games he's participated in, and is also shooting 48 percent from the field. Garcia ranks sixth in the Big Ten in points, 12th in rebounding and one of the league's best players in fouls drawn. Of his 28 games this season, Garcia has led or tied the team in scoring 16 times. The Savage, Minn., product has scored double-digit points in 26 games this year, missing two games, one of which was due to injury. Garcia, an All-Big Ten Preseason selection and the season's first Big Ten Player of the Week, also recorded four-point/rebound double-doubles this season. He was also a top-10 finalist for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award.
Hawkins, a junior guard, received Honorable Mention accolades for the first time after transferring to Minnesota from Howard. The Washington, D.C., native is tied for the nation's best 224 assists, while his 7.5 assists per game ranks him second nationally. In addition to his nation-leading assist mark, Hawkins also leads the team in minutes played (33.3) and steals (50). Since joining the Gophers, the floor general's assist number went from 185 as a sophomore at Howard to 224 this year. Additionally, his turnovers went from 125 last year to 83 this season. Hawkins broke school records in single-game assists (17 vs. IUPUI) and single-season records (224). He ranks second in NCAA active leaders in assists per game at 6.35 and first among Division I players. Against Michigan State earlier this year, Hawkins also established his 500th career assist and now sits 26th in NCAA active leaders at 28th with 565.Â
As a freshman guard, Christie ranks second in scoring in his first year of collegiate basketball. The Arlington Heights, Ill., native averages 11.3 points this season and 29.4 minutes played. Christie is shooting 40.9 from the field and 40.3 from beyond the arc this season. He ranks second on the team in three-pointers attempted (159) and three-pointers made (64) and third in the Big Ten in freshmen scoring. The rookie has also established 105 rebounds, 65 assists, 10 blocks, 18 steals, and 340 points. Playing in 30 games this season, Christie has started in 23 and has scored in double digits 18 times this year, including a six-game Big Ten streak. Christie was also a two-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Christie is the first Gopher freshman to land a spot on the Big Ten's All-Freshman Team since Amir Coffey in 2017.
Fox, a redshirt senior forward, received Minnesota's Sportsmanship Award. Fox, hailing from Mahtomedi, Minn., came to the University of Minnesota after three years at Northern State in 2021-22. However, back-to-back season-ending knee injuries sidelined him for both the 2021-22 and 2022-23 Gopher seasons. In 2023-24, Fox became Minnesota's sixth man and played in all 31 games. He averages 4.7 points and 3.1 rebounds and has 25 blocks and 14 steals this season, averaging 13.3 minutes. Fox has scored double-digit points in five games this year and earned a start against Penn State (3/2/24) on senior night.Â
