3/31/2024 4:45:00 PM | Tennis
MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota tennis program got back in the win column on Sunday after defeating No. 62 Iowa 4-1 at home. The Gophers went on a 4-0 run in the singles round to top the Hawkeyes, moving to a 3-2 record in the Big Ten and 10-7 record overall. The program also moves to a 2-1 record over nationally-ranked Big Ten opponents this season.
Match Highlights
Iowa took the tightly contested doubles point to start the day. In the No. 3 spot, Zeyenb Sarioglan and Aiva Schmitz fell 6-4 against Daianne Hayashida and Nikita Vishwase. No. 2 Sofia Pizzoni and Sofia Pinto went up early against Marisa Schimdt and Pia Kranholdt, but ultimately came up short in a 7(7)-6(2) loss, which clinched the point for the Hawkeyes. The Gophers' No. 1 pair Anali Kocevar and Emma Belluomini were just one point away from getting a win of their own, but their 6(6)-6(5) match was left unfinished.
Minnesota dominated the singles round, barring Iowa from adding any more points to the board. No. 6 Sofia Pizzoni got off to a fast start, taking down Jessica Matthews 6-1, 6-1. Emma Belluomini put the Gophers ahead with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Pia Kranholdt at the No. 4 spot. Minnesota team captain Zeyneb Sarioglan then extended the Maroon and Gold lead with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 5. It was No. 3 Aiva Schmitz, for the third time in the team's three conference victories on the season, who clinched the match for the Gophers. She defeated Barbora Pokorna 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. The remaining singles matches went unfinished, cementing Minnesota's second victory over an ITA nationally-ranked team this season.
Quote from Coach Arterberry
"We competed today, that's for sure. We stuck to our process. We stuck to the plans that we had for the team this weekend. There were three main things that we wanted to do: be willing, be warriors, and protect our home. Obviously, on Friday against Nebraska, we were close but couldn't finish. The student-athletes responded with a win today, and I'm super proud of how all of our team stepped up on every court."
Coach Arterberry on Aiva Schmitz
"I am really excited for Aiva, again having another opportunity to clinch a conference match, and again getting it done."
