Parker Fox had a team-high 14 points, Mike Mitchell Jr. finished with 13 points and six assists, and Dawson Garcia recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, but Minnesota (18-12, 9-10 Big Ten) fell 70-58 to Indiana (17-13, 9-10 Big Ten) in the home finale at Williams Arena.
Ā
Fox made all five field goal attempts and was 4-of-6 at the line to go with five rebounds, two steals, and a blocked shot in 21 minutes. But the Gophers struggled to find a rhythm offensively all night, finishing just 22-of-57 (.386) from the field, including 5-of-26 (.192) from behind the three-point arc. Mitchell Jr. added a team-high six assists, three rebounds, and three steals to his 13 points. Garcia's double-double was his fourth this season. Pharrel Payne finished with eight points and five boards, while Cam Christie had eight points, three rebounds, and a pair of steals.Ā
Ā
Indiana opened the game by scoring the first six points, forcing Ben Johnson to burn an early timeout. The Hoosiers added a dunk for an 8-0 lead before Christie made a three-pointer from the top of the key while being fouled and added the free throw to cut IU's lead in half. Payne scored on a layup to cut it to 8-6, and after IU scored for a four-point lead, Mitchell Jr. knocked down a trey to pull the Gophers within 10-9. The Gophers took their first lead after layups by Payne, Mitchell Jr., and Fox turned a 12-9 deficit into a 15-12 advantage with 12:57 remaining in the half. Indiana cut it to 17-16, but the Gophers used a 6-2 run to take their largest lead at 23-18 with 7L52 left. The Hoosiers reclaimed the lead with a 10-0 run, as Minnesota missed five-straight field goals during a drought covering five minutes and 15 seconds before a Payne layup with 2:37 left pulled the Gophers within 28-25. Indiana wound up with a 12-2 run over the final 7:52 of the half, taking a 30-25 lead to the locker room.
Ā
Payne led the Gophers with eight first-half points, while Mitchell Jr. had seven, and Christie and Fox each had five points. Garcia was scoreless at the half, but led the team with six rebounds. Minnesota missed eight of its last nine field goal attempts to finish the first half at 10-of-28 (.357), including just 2-of-12 (.167) from three-point range.
Ā
Garcia scored his first points of the game early in the second, but IU stretched its lead to seven points at the first media timeout. The Hoosiers stretched their lead to 41-30, as the Gophers opened the second half just 1-of-11 from the floor before Garcia made a layup to cut it to 41-32 with 12:56 left. But IU hit back-to-back three-pointers to expand the lead to 47-32 and force a Minnesota timeout. Over the next five minutes, IU built its lead to 19 points at 59-40 before Mitchell Jr. ended a streak of 15 consecutive missed three-pointers and Christie followed with one of his own to cut it to 59-46 with 5:05 left. Indiana countered with an 8-2 run, extending the lead back to 19 points at 67-48. Minnesota ended the game with a late 10-3 run to cut the final deficit to 12 points, but the Hoosiers swept the season series with their eighth-straight win versus the Gophers.
Minnesota closes out the regular season traveling to Evanston, Ill., to face Northwestern at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, on Big Ten Network.Ā
