Battle Pours in 29, Gophers Beat Wyoming to Advance to Fab 4 of WNIT

Minnesota will play at Troy in the tournament semifinals on Wednesday, April 3

The University of Minnesota women's basketball team beat Wyoming 65-54 on the road to advance to the Fab 4 of the WNIT. Amaya Battle scored 29 points, while Sophie Hart chipped in 14 and Mallory Heyer had eight points and nine rebounds. 

The game was tied 40-40 before Minnesota outscored Wyoming 25-14 in the fourth quarter to win its third game in the WNIT. The victory moved Minnesota's overall season record to 19-15. 

Minnesota will now play at Troy on Wednesday, April 3 and the winner of that game will face either Vermont or St. Louis for the championship. 

Minnesota held Wyoming to only 39.6 percent shooting from the field, including 21.1 percent from beyond the arc. The Gophers limited Wyoming to only two offensive rebounds while collecting 32 defensive rebounds. 



How It Happened

After playing to a 7-7 tie early in the game, Minnesota went on a 10-0 run with 2:14 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Battle, to take a 17-7 lead. Minnesota capitalized on three Wyoming turnovers in the period, turning them into five points on the other end of the floor.

The Gophers maintained their lead in the second quarter and took a 29-24 advantage into the half. Minnesota scored 10 of its 12 second-quarter points in the paint.

Wyoming led 40-34 before Minnesota went on a 6-0 run to tie the game at the end of the third quarter. Minnesota then grabbed a 57-51 lead before going on a 5-0 run to grow its advantage to 62-51 with 50 seconds to go. The Gophers held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 65-54 win.

» The Gophers outscored Wyoming 25-14 in the fourth quarter to break a 40-40 third quarter tie.
» The Gophers held the Cowgirls to only 39.6 percent shooting from the field.
» Amaya Battle, Sophie Hart, and Mallory Heyer combined to account for 78 percent of Minnesota's points.
» Minnesota had a 39-31 edge on the boards in the win.
