Eight Gophers Earn NWCA Scholar All-America Honors

MINNEAPOLIS -- Eight members of the Minnesota wrestling program have been recognized by the National Wrestling Coaches Association for their work in the classroom and on the mat, the NWCA has announced.

Receiving honors for the Golden Gophers were sixth-year seniors Jake Gliva and Garrett Joles, senior Isaiah Salazar, redshirt junior Sam Skillings, redshirt sophomores Blaine Brenner, Drew Roberts and Vance VomBaur, and true freshman Tyler Wells.

For individuals to qualify for the honor, the student-athlete must have at least one full semester of attendance and a cumulative GPA at the nominating institution. In addition, the wrestler must meet one of the following criteria:
  • Must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA and earned All American honors in the same academic year.
  • Must have a 3.2 cumulative GPA and have been a NCAA National tournament qualifier in the same academic year.
  • Must have a 3.5 cumulative GPA and Must have won 60% of their total matches in at least 60% of the team's schedule.
  • Must have a 3.5 cumulative GPA and been a participant at the conference qualifying tournament.   
Minnesota's eight honorees tied with Cornell, Northern Iowa and Penn for second most in the country. Only Oregon State had more recipients with nine.

"It is a privilege to honor these exceptional athletes for their remarkable accomplishments," NWCA Executive Director Mike Moye said. "Congratulations to all the awardees, and we extend our best wishes for their continued success in their academic and athletic endeavors."
