Warian Claims Big Ten Weekly Honors After Historic Performance

MINNEAPOLIS - After his first win as a member of the Gophers, senior Ben Warian was named the co-Big Ten Golfer of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.

After posting rounds of 65 and a personal-best 63, Warian's final round of 70 at the Highland Meadows Intercollegiate vaulted him into the Minnesota record books, claiming the program's lowest 54-hole individual score at 198, breaking Angus Flanagan's record of 200 set nearly five years ago. At the corresponding Hawkeye Invitational, Wisconsin's Cameron Huss also received medalist honors to earn a share of the conference award with Warian.

The win was Warian's first win as a member of the Maroon and Gold, and the program's first team win since the MacDonald Cup back in 2022. Warian's win was the first for a Gopher since Flanagan claimed medalist honors at the 2021 Git R Done Husker Invitational.

After a bogey-free, 6-under 65 in his first round, Warian took the lead after 18 holes and never waivered. He tallied six birdies in his first round, five of which came on the front nine.

With a personal-best 8-under 63 in his second round, Warian recorded a program 36-hole scoring record of 128. His record of 128 brokeFlanagan's record by four strokes (132). Warian nabbed five birdies on the front nine and five birdies on the back nine in round two, vaulting him to a substantial lead heading into the final round.

The native of Stillwater, Minn., never faltered, even in tough conditions. The final round brought about heavy wind gusts, but Warian held strong. A one-over 38 on the front nine and a two-under 33 on the back cemented Warian to the top of the leaderboard to claim the victory.

The Gopher senior has now competed in all of the 11 tournaments this season, leading the Gophers in scoring average (70.10), rounds under par (10), top-10 finishes (3) and top-20 finishes (7).

His impressive play this season comes at no surprise, as Warian set the program's all time scoring record at 70.69 last season, breaking James McLean's record of 70.89, set back in the 1998-99 season.

This is the first time that Warian has received Big Ten Men's Golfer of the Week honors, and it's the most recent win since Flanagan was recognized after his win in 2021. He's now one of six golfers in program history to accomplish the feat along with James McLean, current Gophers head coach Justin Smith, Niall Turner and Erik Van Rooyen. Bronson LaCassie holds the program record with four Golfer of the Week accolades.

Warian and the Gophers now look to the Big Ten Championships, April 26-28, at Scioto Country Club in Upper Arlington, Ohio.
