Oakland Named Big Ten Player of the Week

This is the second time this season Oakland has earned the weekly honor
MINNEAPOLIS - For the second time this season, sophomore Jess Oakland has been named Big Ten Player of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.
The award is the fourth weekly conference honor earned by Oakland, she previously won Big Ten Player of the Week earlier this season on April 1. Last season, the San Jose, Calif., native earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week accolades on Feb. 23 and April 17.
Last week through four games, the shortstop went .500 with two home runs, three RBI, seven hits, and three doubles. Oakland also ranks nationally in multiple categories including: batting average (0.455, sixth in the NCAA, first in the Big Ten), hits (71, eighth in the NCAA, first in the conference), and home runs (19, sixth in the NCAA, first in the Big Ten).
The sophomore has also made her mark in Minnesota's record books following her outstanding performance. She has the second best batting average in a single season, the third most runs scored in a single season, and is tied at third for home runs in a single season.
Oakland has totaled 33 home runs in her career so far, she needs seven more to enter Minnesota's career top five.
