MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota's Ben Warian completed the first round of the NCAA Championships Friday at Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif.

Making his NCAA Championship debut, the Gopher senior carded an even-par 72 in his first 18 holes, placing him tied for 13th place.

After making bogey on the par-4 first hole, Warian bounced right back with a birdie on the par-5 second. He would go onto bogey holes seven and nine to close out his front nine at 2-over par.

As the first tee jitters wore off, his second nine holes would yield a more favorable outcome. Warian started off the back nine with three straight pars followed by a birdie on the par-4 13th hole. He ended his round with another birdie on the par-5 18th to put him at 2-under for the back nine.

The NCAA Championships features two more days of stroke play, after which the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on an advancing team will be determined.

That is followed by a final day of 18 holes of stroke play on Monday, May 27 to determine the top eight teams that will advance to match play as well as the 72-hole individual champion.
