MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota officially punched tickets for three men to the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships after Angelos Mantzouranis, Charles Godfred and Devin Augustine claimed spots on Wednesday and Friday in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Godfred, a true freshman, was the first to punch his ticket to Hayward Field in the men's long jump on Wednesday. The Nigerian, and 2024 Big Ten champion, put forth a steady performance in the long jump in his three preliminary attempts to earn a spot in Eugene. Godfred's leap of 7.80m (25-7 1/4) on his second attempt was good enough for seventh overall, well above the top 12 spot needed to advance out of the NCAA West Regional. Godfred's incredible season-best leap of 8.19m (26-10 1/2) that he set at Texas A&M earlier this year is the No. 3 mark in the NCAA this season. The rookie's qualification to nationals is just the second for the program in the men's long jump, the first since Keita Cline earned a spot all the way back in 1995 where he finished eighth overall.
After an unprecedented weather delay Mantzouranis was able to win his way to Eugene in the men's hammer throw. A native of Greece, Mantzouranis was originally scheduled to compete at 10 a.m. on Wednesday before an attempt to compete early at 9 a.m. was unsuccessful. The three-flight field instead began competition at 10:15 p.m. local time and concluded after 1:30 a.m. in Fayetteville. Despite the schedule change, the true freshman erupted for a series of 71.22m (233-8), 71.85m (235-8) and 72.57m (238-1) which was more than enough to put down the top mark in Fayetteville and also was the top mark between both the East and West regional. Mantzouranis' season best mark of 75.55m (247-10) at the Drake Relays is the No. 3 throw in the country this season. Mantzouranis will attempt to give Minnesota a hammer throw All-American on the men's side for five straight seasons when he competes in Eugene in June.
On Friday Devin Augustine had three opportunities to advance to the NCAA Championships in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. Augustine, along with Dante White, Charles Godfred and Gary Afram finished 18th overall in a time of 40.09 in the 4x100m relay to kick off the day. Augustine, a Trinidad & Tobago native, then missed out on a trip to Eugene in the 100m by 0.01 seconds after putting down a time of 10.08 (+2.5 m/s) to finish fifth in the first of three quarterfinal heats. The Big Ten 100m champion bounced back with a resilient performance in the 200m by putting down an automatic qualifying time of 20.36 (+2.1 m/s) to claim his first individual spot at the NCAA Outdoor Championships of his career. Augustine becomes just the second Gopher man to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the 200m, and marks the second straight season after fellow Trinidad & Tobago national Carlon Hoston qualified in the event last season.
Also competing on Friday for the Maroon and Gold was Eli Hoeft in the 1500m quarterfinal. Hoeft, a captain, reached the second round for the first time on Wednesday and concluded his Gopher career 21st at the NCAA West Regional in a time of 3:47.34. Dan VanAcker made his NCAAs debut in the 3000m steeplechase on Friday and finished 46th. Also competing at regionals for the first time was Ramy Ayoub in the 800m first round on Wednesday where he finished 37th. Lastly junior pole vaulter Jak Urlacher cleared 5.32m (17-5 1/2) in his second trip to the NCAA West Regional but finished 14th overall based on the amount of misses.
Minnesota's women conclude their NCAA West Regional action tomorrow, starting with the 4x100m relay at 5 p.m. CT. Minnesota's women qualified two individuals on Thursday and had an additional seven advance on the track. Saturday's finale will also feature All-American Shelby Frank in the women's discus, Alliyah McNeil in the high jump, the 4x100m relay team, the 3000m steeplechase quarterfinal as well as Brooke Moore and Diarra Sow in the triple jump.
