He'll be up for All-American honors, which will be decided later in June
MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota junior left-hander Connor Wietgrefe was named ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I First Team All-Midwest Region, the organization announced this morning.
The ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. I All-America teams will be announced the morning of Friday, June 14 prior to the start of the 2024 NCAA Div. I College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. First Team All-Region selections are eligible for All-America honors.
The ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove winners in all divisions will be announced on Wednesday, June 19. ABCA/Rawlings National Pitchers and Position Players of the Year will be announced on Monday, June 24.
The ABCA All-America team was first recognized in 1949 and now includes nine divisions: NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA Divisions I, II and III, Pacific Association Division, and high school. ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove teams were first recognized in 2007.
Connor Wietgrefe added another honor after what was a dominant 2024 season. He was named First Team All-Big Ten, CSC Academic All-District and was named Minnesota's Dave Winfield Pitcher of the Year.
The southpaw had a 7-4 record in 13 starts. His eight wins tied for first and his 2.77 ERA ranked second among Big Ten pitchers. Wietgrefe ranked in the top ten in the conference in strikeouts (74 - sixth), innings (78.0 - eighth), earned runs (25 - fourth) and runs (35 - ninth). He was second among Big Ten hurlers in fielding independent pitching (FIP) at 2.88 and third in wins above replacement (WAR) at 1.53.
A Prior Lake, Minn., native, Wietgrefe was one of nine players in the conference to pitch a complete game this season. In 78.0 innings, he allowed just 12 extra-base hits, only one of which was a home run that did not leave the ballpark. The Gophers won 10 of the 15 games he appeared in, including winning six of his eight Big Ten starts. Wietgrefe was the first Gopher since Eli Wilson in 2019 to be named First Team All-Big Ten.
