Joe Polyak Wins Gold at Junior Pan Pacific Championships

Gopher freshman Joe Polyak and the USA World Junior Swim Team took gold in the 4x100 relay at the 2024 Junior Pan Pacific Championships. The biannual event was hosted in Canberra, Australia.
The relay team swam a 3:35.60, with Polyak's breaststroke split being 1:00.18. The team consisted of Gavin Keogh (Erie, Colo./Flatiron Athletic Club), Rowan Cox (Austin, Texas/Longhorn Aquatics), and Jason Zhao (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mason Manta Rays).
Polyak also competed in the 100-meter breaststroke, recording a long-course time of 1:00.85 (ninth place), and the 200 individual medley, notching a long-course time of 2:01.35 (fourth place).
The Iowa City, Iowa native qualified for the event based on his performance at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. In the trial preliminaries, he posted times of 1:01.43 in the 100m breast and 2:00.60 in the 200 IM. He also notched a time of 2:12.52 in the 200m breast, finishing 18th.
Fans can see Polyak and the rest of the Gopher swimming and diving program in action on Friday, Oct. 11 for the first home meet of the 2024-25 season.
