Hayes has been a member of the Gopher Soccer staff since 2020
MINNEAPOLIS - University of Minnesota soccer head coach Erin Chastain has promoted Maya Hayes to Associate Head Coach with the Golden Gophers.
Hayes is currently in her fifth season as a member of Minnesota's staff. She joined in 2020 and has accumulated a record of 33-24-14 as an assistant coach.
Since joining the staff, Hayes helped lead Minnesota to earn its first result against a top 10 opponent (No. 8 Rutgers) in nearly 10 years and its first Big Ten Tournament berth since 2018. In 2021, Hayes was named to the United Soccer Coaches 2021-22 Class of the 30 Under 30 Program, selected from a candidate pool of nearly 300 applicants.
Now in her first season promoted to an associate head coach, Hayes has guided the Gophers to a historic start. With a 5-0-1 mark through its first six games, Minnesota has seen its best start since the 2013 season when the Gophers were 6-0-0.
Primarily working with the forwards, Hayes' guidance has allowed three Gophers to have multi-goal games this season. Redshirt freshman Caroline Birdsell earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week to open the season after securing a brace in her first start. A week later, senior Khyah Harper saw Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week accolades after finishing back-to-back hat tricks.
Hayes came to Minnesota after spending two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Auburn. During her tenure, the Tigers posted a combined 19-16-4 record, including an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2018 that highlighted a 12-win campaign.
Prior to her time with Auburn, Hayes played professionally in the National Women's Soccer League as a member of Sky Blue FC from 2014-18. Hayes was the sixth overall pick of the first round in the 2014 NWSL Draft after a historic career at Penn State.
From 2010-13, Hayes excelled on the field as a four-year starter for the Nittany Lions, earning All-America honors in 2011, 2012 and 2013. In both 2011 and 2012, Hayes was named the Big Ten Conference Player of the Year. The 2011 campaign proved to be especially historic for her, as she set Penn State's all-time, single-season record with 70 points, while also scoring 31 goals (second all-time). Both marks paced the entire nation in 2011.
Over the course of 89 career games, she tallied 71 goals and 163 points, both of which rank third all-time at Penn State. In January of 2020, TopDrawerSoccer.com named Hayes to their Best XI of the 2010s.
