Gopher Tennis Kicks Off Season with 12th Annual Gopher Invite

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota tennis team begins its 2024 fall season with the Gopher Invitational at Baseline Tennis Center, Sept. 20-22. The Gophers welcome twelve teams to compete on campus: St. Thomas, Marquette, North Dakota, South Dakota, Omaha, Northern Iowa, Creighton, Northern Illinois, Milwaukee, Drake, and University of Chicago.
Tournament Format
Play begins at 9:00 a.m. (CT) on Friday with two rounds of doubles, followed by singles play starting at 12:30 p.m. (CT). Doubles will be played as one set to six, while singles will be played as best two-out-of-three sets with a ten-point tiebreaker for the third set.
Gopher Participants
The University of Minnesota tennis roster features many newcomers, all of which will make their maroon and gold debut at the Gopher Invitational: freshmen Deniz Turan and Nora Knezevic, sophomore transfers Jeselle Ante, Yinong Ma, Anlin Xie, and junior transfer Arina Valitova.
Student-athletes Anali Kocevar, Sofia Pinto, Mia Liepert, and Aiva Schmitz will all be returning as Gophers this season, with Liepert, Pinto, and Schmitz all opening their season at this weekend's event.
This will be Gopher head coach Lois Arterberry and assistant coach Anastasia Pennington's second season coaching at the Gopher Invitational. Volunteer coach Venkat Manne will be making his collegiate coaching debut.

Post-Match Meet & Greet
On Sunday, Sept. 22, immediately following the final round of matches, the program will be hosting a meet-and-greet for fans at Baseline Tennis Center. This event will feature a chance to speak with University of Minnesota players and coaches.
Next On The Docket
Following the Gopher Invitational, the Gophers will travel to Memphis, Tenn. to compete in the ITA Central Regional from Oct. 9-14.
