Gophers Complete Day One of Boilermaker Classic Tied for Fifth

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The University of Minnesota women's golf team completed 36-holes of competition today at the Boilermaker Classic. Minnesota moved two places up the leaderboard between rounds after playing a consistent day one of the event. The Maroon and Gold are currently tied for fifth place with a score of 302-302--604 (+28). Junior Isabella McCauley leads the Gophers in solo fifth place after posting a two-under-par 70 in round two. 

"It was good to be back out competing," said head coach Matt Higgins. "The ladies really gave a solid effort and kept grinding out there despite windy conditions. We are looking forward to seeing what tomorrow brings!" 

Host Purdue sits on the top of the leaderboard with a day-one total of 585 (+9). 

Notable:

Junior Isabella McCauley improved by six strokes between rounds to move up the leaderboard 25 spots and ended the day in solo fifth place. McCauley tallied five birdies and posted a day-one score of 76-70-146 (+2). With one round to play, McCauley will look to move up the leaderboard and defend her 2023 title. 

Sophomore Mariana Mesones played a consistent day on the course posting a day-one score of 75-75-150 (+6). After carding four birdies on day one, she sits tied for 15th place.

Making her Gopher debut, freshman Reese McCauley posted five birdies to her scorecard on the first day of competition to close the day tied for 26th place. She closes day one on the course with a score of 75-77-152 (+8). 

Also making her first appearance in Maroon and Gold, freshman Jordana Windhorst-Knudsen notched 23 pars on day one to end with a score of 76-83-159 (+15). 

Sophomore Sara Tomaszewski carded a day one score of 85-80-165 (+21) and tallied one birdie 21 pars after two rounds of play. 

Playing as an individual, junior Junrui (Ruby) Chi shot a career best in her time as a Gopher carding a 74 (+2) in round one. After carding an 81 (+9) in the second round, she ended the day tied for 42nd place. 

Looking Ahead:

The team is back in action tomorrow, Sept. 3, for round three of the Boilermaker Classic. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. CT.
