Minnesota completes preseason play at 7-3
GREEN BAY, Wis. --The No. 17 Minnesota volleyball team took their final match in three sets (25-17, 25-15, 25-18.) against the Chicago State Cougars Saturday afternoon to finish the three-day Capital Credit Union Classic.
The Gophers (7-3, 0-0 Big Ten) finished non-conference play with six straight wins after starting out 1-3. As a team, Minnesota hit .366 for the afternoon while holding Chicago State (4-8, 0-0 NEC) to just .094.
Julia Hanson had 11 kills while Grote posted eight kills and five blocks. Alex Acevedo and Zeynep Palabiyik went for eight digs while Calissa Minatee had five blocks.
Karly Klaer and Patrycja Lagida led Chicago State (4-8, 0-0 Horizon League) with seven and 10 kills, respectively, while Andrea Calderon paced the backrow with nine digs.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Gophers took set one, 25-17. Grote, Acevedo and Hanson had three kills each while Shaffmaster had 10 assists and three digs. The Gophers finished on a 9-1 run after being tied at 16-16. For the set, Minnesota hit .394 compared to .121 for Chicago State.
SET 2 | Minnesota trailed 3-1 early on before going on a 6-0 run to open up a four-point lead. The Gophers would never trail the rest of the way. Hanson tallied five more kills and a pair of aces while Kali Engeman posted two blocks. Lauren Crowl came off the bench for a pair of kills while Grote tallied three more. The 'U' extended its lead to as many as 10 to finish off the set, 25-15.
SET 3 | The Gophers started hot again in set three, scoring five of the first six points. Chicago State cut the lead to three at 9-6. A block and a kill from Crowl helped Minnesota take another six-point lead at 15-9, leading to CSU's final timeout. The Cougars would get no closer than five the rest of the way as Minnesota closed out the third set, 25-18.
