Gophers Tie No. 24 USC, 2-2, on Boman’s Late Equalizer

This is the first result Minnesota has picked up against a top 25 opponent since tying No. 8 Rutgers 2-2 in 2022
LOS ANGELES - After a two goal performance in the second half, the University of Minnesota soccer team powered to a 2-2 draw at No. 24 USC on Thursday evening at Dignity Health Sports Park. The Golden Gophers (8-1-2, 2-1-1 B1G) pick up a valuable road point against the 24th ranked Trojans (7-1-2, 3-0-1 B1G).
Goals came from senior Khyah Harper and graduate Sophia Boman. Caroline Birdsell and Paige Kalal tallied an assist each. Goalkeeper Sarah Martin made one save on the night, but came off her line multiple times to prevent the Trojans from creating shot chances.
As a team, Minnesota led USC in shots on goal (6-3) and corner kicks (9-1). The draw marks the first point Minnesota has earned off a top 25 opponent since tying No. 8 Rutgers, 2-2, in 2022.
The Trojans took the lead in the first minute of play. Maile Hayes found the back of the net using her right foot within Minnesota's 18-yard box.
Possession stayed even and within the midfield, but USC would double its lead 21 minutes later. Kayla Colbert picked the ball off the Gophers' backline and finished.
Despite Minnesota trailing by two at the half, the Gophers led in shots 5-4 and shots on goal 3-2.
Minnesota continued the offensive pressure in the second half and succeeded in the 63rd minute. Birdsell delivered a ball from half field to Harper's feet. Harper sped past the Trojans backline and finished her 13th goal of the season. Harper now leads the nation in goals alongside California's Karlie Lema.
In the 80th minute, the Gophers earned a free kick in the Trojans' defensive half. Kalal took the set piece opportunity as Boman got on the end of it to tie the match, 2-2.
Minnesota looks ahead to face UCLA on Sunday at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Kick off is set for 3 p.m. CT and can be streamed on B1G+.
