Minnesota Drops to UCLA, 3-1

9/29/2024 5:49:00 PM | Soccer

The Gophers fall to the Bruins in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES - The University of Minnesota soccer team fell to UCLA, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. The Golden Gophers are now 8-2-2 (2-2-1 B1G), while the Bruins improve to 9-2-2 (4-0-1 B1G).

Sophomore Kate Childers scored Minnesota's lone goal of the match with one assist coming from fellow sophomore Paige Kalal. The goal is Childers' first of her career and the assist is Kalal's seventh this season.

Goalkeeper Sarah Martin made a career high seven saves against the Bruins, she faced 10 shots on goal.

UCLA got on the board first in the 31st minute. Bridgette Marin-Valencia found the back of the net with an assist from Quincy McMahon.

Despite trailing, Minnesota managed to get three shots in the first 45 minutes from Caroline Birdsell, Sophia Boman, and Khyah Harper.

At the 60 minute mark, Childers leveled the match off a set piece play from Kalal. Kalal delivered the ball from half field, giving Childers the opportunity to tap the ball in.

10 minutes later, the Bruins retook the lead off a breakaway play. Sunshine Fontes played a ball past the Gophers' backline to Paloma Dubert, who scored.

UCLA added their third goal of the match in the 81st minute. McMahon picked up her second assist, passing to  Maya Evans who finished.

Minnesota returns home this Friday to face Northwestern at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium in its annual Rock the Robbie match. Kick off is set for 7 p.m. CT and can be streamed on B1G+.
