Frost Clinches 500th Career Win as Gophers Take Down UConn in Season Opener
9/27/2024 9:42:00 PM | Women's Hockey
STORRS, CONN. - The No. 2/3 ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team got off to a fast start to the 2024-25 season, defeating No. 9 Connecticut 4-1 in the Gophers' season opener on Friday evening. This win brings head coach Brad Frost to a career record of 500-109-41, making him just the fourth head coach in Division I women's hockey history to reach the mark of 500 wins.Â
Â
The Maroon and Gold wasted little time finding their rhythm, as redshirt senior forward Abbey Murphy would score the first of her two goals on the night exactly 30 seconds into the first period, with assists from Josefin Bouveng and Ella Huber. Her second would come later in the first period, with 2:44 remaining, assisted again by Bouveng.Â
Â
Sophomore forward Emma Kreisz got the Gophers up 2-0 only 2:17 into the first, going unassisted en route to the 7th goal of her collegiate career.Â
Â
Freshman defender Chloe Primerano added to Minnesota's first period offensive prowess, tallying her first collegiate goal on the Gophers' first power play of the season, only 5:05 into the game. Kreisz and sophomore forward Ava Lindsay recorded assists on Primerano's score.Â
Â
Murphy notched Minnesota's fourth and final goal of the game just before the first intermission. The Huskies would only score once, tallying a Megan Woodworth goal 6:59 into the second period, securing Coach Frost's place in the 500-win club.
Â
Quotable:
"It's special, obviously, to reach a milestone like this," said Frost. "Certainly, there's been so many people that have been involved with it, from players to staff coaches. It also means I've been around a long time, but I'm really proud of our group here tonight and being able to get that big one to start the year."
Â
Coach Frost on Chloe Primerano
"There's a lot of fanfare and a lot of hype around Chloe as she got to the University of Minnesota, and she didn't disappoint. She's such a strong player, strong skater. Great quick one timer there on the power play to get her first of many in a Gopher uniform, and I'm really happy for her."
