Gophers Split Doubleheader in Spring Season Opener

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The University of Minnesota tennis program opened its spring season on Saturday, defeating Middle Tennessee State 4-2 and falling to Florida Gulf Coast 2-4 on the road. The Gophers begin the 2024-25 season with a 1-1 record.
Minnesota vs. Middle Tennessee
The Gophers faced a tough doubles round against the Blue Raiders, ultimately losing the overall point. In the No. 1 matchup, Mia Liepert and Anali Kocevar secured a 6-4 victory over Lena Peyer and Eloise Swarbrick. In No. 3, Ilaria Sposetti and Cassidy Mataia defeated Sofia Pinto and Anlin Xie, 6-4. Middle Tennessee clinched the point with a 7(7)-6(5) win by Alessia Truden and Rutuja Chaphalkar over Yinong Ma and Jeselle Ante.
Minnesota secured the win over Middle Tennessee State after winning four of six singles matches. In the No. 1 matchup, Aiva Schmitz defeated Alessia Truden 1-0, 6-6. No. 4 Anali Kocevar triumphed 6-4, 6-1 over Zenn Lim, and No. 3 Mia Liepert won a tight 3-6, 6-2, 7(9)-6(7) match against Ilaria Sposetti. No. 2 singles saw Sofia Pinto complete the victory with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win over Rutuja Chaphalkar.
