Garcia made 8-of-15 field goals, including a couple three-pointers, while adding five rebounds for the Gophers. It was his eighth game with 20 or more points this season, including his second in Big Ten play for Minnesota (8-6, 0-3 Big Ten). Patterson's 14-point effort was his seventh double-figure output in his last nine games, and his eight rebounds were a season-high. Isaac Asuma came off the bench to finish with seven points, four rebounds, two assists, and a steal, while Femi Odukale had six points, four boards, and a team-high four assists.
As a team, Minnesota made 25-of-52 (.481) field goals, but the Gophers struggled by going 4-of-17 (.235) from three-point range and just 7-of-16 (.438) at the free throw line. Minnesota was outrebounded, 34-31, but did have a 34-28 edge in points in the paint. Fletcher Loyer led Purdue (10-4, 2-1 B1G) with 24 points, while Braden Smith had 20 points, 10 assists, and six rebounds, and Trey Kaufman-Renn finished with 17 points. The Boilers made 29-of-58 field goals, including 11-of-25 (.440) three-pointers, and 12-of-16 free throws.
Minnesota jumped ahead 4-0 on a baseline jumper by Garcia and a driving layup by Fox, but Purdue responded with an 8-0 run before Odukale scored on a reverse layup. Trailing 10-6, Minnesota went on a 6-1 run over a four-minute span, with Mike Mitchell Jr. (four points, two rebounds, two assists) hitting a jumper and Asuma and Patterson adding layups, to pull ahead 12-11 with 10:36 left in the half. The Boilers knocked down a pair of three-pointers to take a 17-12 lead, but a Frank Mitchell dunk and another jumper from Mitchell Jr. keyed a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to 19-17. An Asuma layup kept the Gophers within two points, but Purdue expanded its lead to 27-21, before the Gophers closed the half with a 6-1 run to go to the locker room trailing just 28-27.
Garcia led Minnesota with six first-half points and four rebounds, while Patterson had five points, Asuma had four points and three boards, Parker Fox had four points and two assists, and Mitchell Jr. had four points. The Gophers made 12-of-25 (.480) field goals, but were just 1-of-6 (.167) from three-point range. Kaufman-Renn and Loyer each scored eight points to lead Purdue at the half. The Boilers were 12-of-27 (.444) from the field, including 2-of-8 from long-range, and had a slim 17-14 rebounding advantage.
The Gophers made four of their first five field goals to start the second half, including a pair of layups by Garcia, tying the score at 35-35 with 15:45 left. But Purdue grabbed its largest lead with a 7-0 run, forcing Minnesota head coach Ben Johnson to call timeout with 14:03 left. Trey Edmonds (three points, four rebounds) made a free throw and a dunk to pull Minnesota within 42-38, and Garcia banked a short shot off the glass to make it 44-40 with 11:47 left, but a three-point play by Kaufman-Renn extended Purdue's lead back to seven points. Asuma countered with a three-pointer to cut it to 47-43, but the Boilers used another 7-0 run to take an 11-point lead at 54-43. An Odukale jumper pulled Minnesota back within nine, but Purdue expanded the margin to 16 before a Mitchell free throw ended the run. A layup and a three from Garcia cut the deficit to 63-51 with 5:46 remaining, but Smith connected on his third and fourth treys of the night to stretch Purdue's lead back to 69-52. Patterson hit a three from the top of the key for the Gophers, but Smith added his fifth for a 72-55 lead with 3:37 on the clock and the Boilers finished 9-of-17 (.529) from beyond the arc in the second half to secure the win.
