Minnesota Tennis Heads to Ames to face Air Force, Iowa State

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota tennis program will hit the road for the second time this season, traveling to Ames, Iowa this weekend for matchups against Air Force and Iowa State.
The Gophers (1-2) will face the Falcons (2-1) on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 10:00 a.m. (CT), then the Cyclones (2-0) on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 11:00 a.m. (CT).
The Competition
Minnesota will face Air Force for the first time in program history on Saturday. The Falcons have started the season 2-1 with wins over Montana and Metro State and a tight 4-3 loss to Colorado.
Minnesota is 34-3 all-time against Iowa State and has won the last 33 matchups. The Gophers defeated the Cyclones 4-1 at home in their most recent meeting on March 9, 2019. Iowa State last defeated Minnesota in 1976. The Cyclones have opened the spring season 2-0 with wins over North Texas and Omaha.
The Gophers will face each team in Iowa State's brand new tennis facility, which opened on Jan. 24, in Iowa State's first matchup against North Texas.
The Season So Far
The 'U' kicked off its season in Florida on Jan. 18-19. Minnesota defeated Middle Tennessee State 4-2 in its first match on Jan. 18 but later lost to Florida Gulf Coast 4-2.
On Jan. 19, Minnesota traveled to Boca Raton, Fla., and was defeated by Florida Atlantic 4-0, bringing the Maroon and Gold to an overall 1-2 record on the year.
Individually, Minnesota had four players earn singles wins on the opening weekend of play. Aiva Schmitz, Anali Kocevar, Mia Liepert, and Sofia Pinto all won against Middle Tennessee, while Deniz Turan defeated Paloma Goldsmith of Florida Gulf Coast.
The duo of Anali Kocevar and Mia Liepert opened the season 2-1 at No. 1 doubles, earning wins over Middle Tennessee State and Florida Gulf Coast.
