The weekly award is McKinney's first from the conference
MINNEAPOLIS - After scoring double digits in nine of her last 11 games, including a team high of 25 points against Penn State, Minnesota freshman guard Tori McKinney has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
The weekly award marks McKinney's first from the Big Ten and her second of the season. She is the first Gopher to receive the nod since Grace Grocholski (Feb. 19, 2024). Last week, McKinney was recognized as U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) National Freshman of the Week.
McKinney, a native of Minnetonka, Minn., has started the last 11 games for the Maroon & Gold. Since then, the freshman is averaging 12.6 points per game, leads the team with 18 steals and seven blocks, and has added on 31 assists.
Against Prairie View A&M, McKinney set a career high 17 points and re-set it against Penn State with 25. The freshman heavily contributed to the Maroon & Gold's largest win margin in a Big Ten Home Opener since 2011-12 when Minnesota beat Indiana 84-43.
On Sunday, McKinney's 11 points in the fourth quarter helped Minnesota rally to defeat RV/RV Illinois at Williams Arena. The guard ended the game with 11 points, five assists, and five rebounds.
McKinney and the Golden Gophers will be back in action this Wednesday as they host the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT at Williams Arena.
