Caroline Birdsell and Mariah Nguyen each scored a goal in the first half
SEATTLE - The University of Minnesota soccer team (6-7-2, 2-5-2 Big Ten) fell to No. 17 Washington (10-1-5, 7-0-2 Big Ten) 3-2 on Thursday night on the road in front of 896 spectators.
Despite the loss, the Golden Gophers scored two goals in the first half. The goals marked the only two first-half goals the 17th-ranked Huskies have conceded all season, and the only time Washington has trailed at halftime.
Caroline Birdsell scored Minnesota's first goal, assisted by Sawyer Danielson and Tatiana Cunningham, her fourth of the season. Mariah Nguyen netted the second goal, her third of the year.
Washington got on the board in the first minute of the game. Alex Buck scored with assists from Jadyn Holdenried and Lucy Newlin.
In the 16th minute, Birdsell scored on a header. Cunningham gained possession and passed to Danielson on the right side of the 18-yard box. She sent in the cross that Birdsell finished.
In the 41st minute, Nguyen gave Minnesota the lead. Birdsell sent in a pass that rebounded off a Washington defender. Nguyen one-touched a right-footed shot to score before halftime.
Washington's final two goals came in the 60th minute from Avery Nguyen and in the 81st minute from Kelsey Branson. Both goals were unassisted.
The Gophers face the Oregon Ducks in their final regular-season road game on Sunday Oct. 19. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. CT and can be streamed live on B1G+.
