Minnesota hits the road next Tuesday to face Kansas

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota women's basketball team (4-0, 0-0 Big Ten) defeated the NJIT Highlanders (3-1, 0-0 America East), 88-39, on Friday evening in front of 2,973 fans at Williams Arena.

After dishing out three assists in today's game, Amaya Battle is now one of five Gophers in program history to have recorded 1,000+ points and 500+ assists in program history.

The Gophers had three players score in double figures, led by Brylee Glenn, who had 13 points and two steals. Sophie Hart tacked on 12 points and Grace Grocholski chipped in as well with 10 points.

The Minnesota defense held NJIT shooters to only 29.6 percent from the field, including 22.7 percent from three-point range.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 4-3 advantage, Minnesota went on a 16-0 run with 8:11 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Glenn, to increase its lead to 20-3. The Gophers then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 24-5 advantage. Minnesota did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 16 of its 24 points close to the basket.

Minnesota built that first quarter lead to 39-16 before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 1:07 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Battle, to increase its lead to 46-16, a score that would hold until halftime. Minnesota dominated in the paint, scoring 14 of its 22 points close to the basket.

The Gophers wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 14-0 run, punctuated by a three from Kennedy Klick, to expand its lead further to 60-16 with 5:21 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Highlanders had cut into that lead somewhat, but Minnesota still entered the fourth quarter with a 65-24 edge. The Maroon and Gold knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 19 total points.

Minnesota kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Finau Tonga's layup, to grow the lead to 74-27 with 5:35 to go in the contest. The Gophers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 88-39 win. Minnesota took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 23 points in the paint.
