The Gophers return to action next week at the Baha Mar Hoops Pink Flamingo Championship

LAWRENCE, Kan. - The University of Minnesota women's basketball team (4-1, 0-0 Big Ten) came up short in a 63-57 loss to the Kansas Jayhawks (5-0, 0-0 Big 12) on the road Wednesday evening.

The Golden Gophers had three players score in double figures, led by Tori McKinney, who had 14 points. Mara Braun added 13 points and Grace Grocholski helped out with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Minnesota forced 19 Kansas turnovers while committing 11 themselves in Wednesday's game. The Gophers turned those takeaways into 13 points on the other end of the floor. Amaya Battle's five steals led the way for Minnesota.

How It Happened

Minnesota struggled out of the gate, falling behind 18-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Minnesota kept the Jayhawks from increasing their lead before going on a 12-0 run, highlighted by a three from Grocholski, to take a 25-23 lead. The Jayhawks then came roaring back to take a 29-27 lead heading into halftime.

Kansas continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 37-31 advantage before Minnesota went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Grocholski, to tie things up at 37 with 6:45 to go in the third. The Gophers could not advance their rally further as the Jayhawks took a 49-43 lead into the fourth quarter.

Minnesota came out of the third quarter break going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Finau Tonga's layup, to even the score at 49 all with 7:40 to go in the contest. The Gophers could not turn their rally into a victory, as the Jayhawks outscored them 14-8 the rest of the way to hand Minnesota the 63-57 loss. Minnesota took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 14 points in the paint.
