How It Happened
SET 1 | The two teams battled throughout the first 16 points, with neither leading by more than two. With the score tied 8-8, Iowa went on a 5-1 run, getting three kills and an ace to go up 13-9. Minnesota took its first timeout at that point. Kills from Hanson and Myers combined with a block from Myers and Hanson made it 13-12 after the break, but Iowa scored five of the next seven after that to go up 18-14, forcing Minnesota's final timeout of the frame. The Gophers kept battling, scoring four of six to make it 20-18 before the Hawkeyes called time. Kinney had two kills and Taylor had one in the spurt. Minnesota got it back within one at 21-20 before UI tallied a pair of kills to go up 23-20. A Gilk kill got the Gophers back within two before the Hawkeyes finished out set one, 25-21. UI hit .321 compared to .222 for Minnesota in the frame. Hanson led the Gophers with five kills.

SET 2 | Minnesota started out much better in set two, scoring six of the first eight. Myers, Swenson and Gilk had early kills. The Hawkeyes would score five of the next eight to cut the lead to two at 9-7, but then two errors and a kill from Kinney put Minnesota up 12-7. The Gophers would go up 14-8 after a kill from Gilk and led 15-11 at the media timeout. A UI kill made it 15-12 before a Gilk kill and block from Hanson and Myers put the 'U' up 17-12. Two Iowa kills cut the lead to 17-14 after that. Minnesota would respond with four of the next six, getting a kill from Kinney and ace from Swenson in the process, to go up 21-16 and force an Iowa timeout. The Hawkeyes would get as close as three at 22-19 before two kills from Gilk and an error from UI gave Minnesota the set two win, 25-19.

SET 3 | Iowa came out hot in set three, scoring four of the first five points. Minnesota answered with five of the next seven to tie it up at 6-6. Two kills from the home team put them up 8-6 before a Myers kill and a pair of Gopher blocks put the visitors up 9-8, forcing a Hawkeyes timeout. After the break, Minnesota kept its momentum going, scoring on three more blocks and a kill from Kinney to go up 14-10. UI would get as close as two at 15-13 before Minnesota extended it back up to four at 17-13. After a pair of points made it two again at 17-15, Hanson, Myers and Kinney delivered kills to put Minnesota up 20-15, forcing an Iowa timeout. Two kills from Myers and two from Kinney helped the Gophers put set two away, 25-18, taking a 2-1 lead.

SET 4 | The two teams went back and forth early on in set four, splitting the first 22 points. Neither team lead by more than one throughout the first half of the set. Minnesota took a 13-12 lead after kills from Hanson and Myers, but the Hawkeyes tallied three straight to take a 15-13 lead into the media timeout. Minnesota got it back to within one at 15-14 following Myers' 12th kill of the match, but two UI points put the home team up 17-14, forcing a Minnesota timeout. Two kills from Kinney cut the lead to one at 17-16, leading to Iowa's first timeout of the set. UI scored the next two before Minnesota answered back with two more to make it 19-18. A block from the home team helped them become the first to 20, leading 20-18. Hanson's 12th kill helped the Gophers climb to within one at 21-20 before an Iowa kill and an ace put them up 23-20. Coach Cook called his final timeout of the set at this point. An Iowa service error and a kill from Kinney made it 23-22, forcing UI's final timeout of the frame. The Hawkeyes grabbed two kills out of the next three points to win set four, 25-23.
