Minnesota vs. San Francisco

Minnesota Rallies, But Fall to the Dons

11/22/2025 7:30:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Langston Reynolds scored 16 points, Cade Tyson had 14, and Jaylen Crocker-Johnson added 10, but Minnesota's second-half rally came up short in a 77-65 loss to San Francisco at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The Gophers (4-2) used a 13-4 run to tie the score 52-52 with 9:08 remaining, but the Dons (5-1) never trailed and were able to pull away in the closing minutes. Reynolds came off the bench to lead Minnesota in scoring for the first time this season. He made 7-of-9 field goals, including a three-pointer, but struggled at the line by making just 1-of-7. As a team, Minnesota had an off night at the line, making 15-of-30. Reynolds also tied for the team lead with five rebounds and three assists.

Tyson, who leads the Big Ten in scoring, was 4-of-8 from the field and 5-of-7 at the line, while Crocker-Johnson had 10 points and three rebounds before fouling out late. Bobby Durkin made three treys to finish with nine points and tie for team-high honors with five boards, and Chansey Willis Jr. finished with nine points, three steals, and three assists. Minnesota made 22-of-46 (478) field goals, but connected on 14-of-23 (.609) attempts as it rallied in the second half. The Gophers were 6-of-14 (.429) from long-range in the game.

San Francisco, which has three straight 20-win seasons and won 25 times last year, was led by Ryan Beasley's game-high 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Four other players reached double-figures for the Dons.

San Francisco established an early 7-2 lead, but Crocker-Johnson made a three from the top of the key to cut it to 7-5. A pair of free throws from Tyson and a layup by Willis kept the Gophers within 12-9, but the Dons went on a 7-1 run over the next three minutes to stretch the USF lead to 19-10 with 10:43 left until half. Minnesota countered with an 8-2 run, highlighted by three-pointers from Reynolds and Durkin, to cut the lead back to 21-18 at the 8:12 mark. Reynolds drove for a layup to keep the Gophers within three, but the Dons extended their advantage to 29-23 at the final media timeout of the first half. USF added its fifth three-pointer to lead 32-23 with 2:57 left. Durkin drained his second three from the top of the key to cut the lead to six, but the Dons took a 34-27 lead to the locker room.

Durkin and Reynolds led the Gophers at the half with six points apiece, while Tyson had five points and a team-high three rebounds, and Willis and Crocker-Johnson each had four points. The Gophers were 8-of-23(.348) from the field, including 4-of-10 from three-point range, but just 7-of-13 (.538) at the free throw line. USF held a slim 17-15 rebounding edge. Beasley and Riley each had 10 points to pace the Dons. USF was 12-of-25 (.480) from the field, including 5-of-12 (417) from long-range, and made 5-of-7 (.714) free throws in the opening 20 minutes.

The Dons opened the second stanza by pushing the lead to 37-27 before Tyson drilled a three-pointer from the left corner. A Reynolds layup and Willis Jr. going 2-of-3 at the line cut it to 41-34. Beasley drained a deep three, his third of the game, to put the Dons up 46-36 with 15:05 left. Minnesota trimmed it to seven points on a free throw by Nehemiah Turner and a Tyson dunk, but Beasley banked in a running jumper for a 48-39 lead at the first media timeout with 13:38 left. Minnesota used a 6-2 run to pull within 50-44, but USF responded with an alley-oop dunk to lead by eight with 11:10 remaining.

The Gophers drew the largest applause of the day, as layups from Reynolds and Tyson cut it to 52-48, and then a Willis Jr. steal led to a Crocker-Johnson layup. Minnesota earned another defensive stop at the other end, and Reynolds drove for another layup to tie the score with 9:08 remaining. The Dons responded with a three-pointer from Guillermo Diaz-Graham, and Reynolds added another layup to keep the Gophers within one points, but Beasley knocked down his fourth trey for a 58-54 lead. Crocker-Johnson scored on a layup with 6:39 left to once again pull the Gophers within two points, but Minnesota continued to struggle at the free throw line, and USF added another three to extend its lead to 63-56 at the final media timeout with 3:41 left. A pair of Crocker-Johnson free throws pulled the Gophers within five, but he fouled out with 2:07 remaining and the Dons scored five-straight to make it 68-58. Willis Jr. scored with 1:24 left, but Beasley made a pair of free throws to stretch the lead back to 10 points. The teams traded threes, with Durkin connecting for his third trey of the game, but the Dons sealed the 12-point neutral court win.

Next up for the Gophers are a pair of games at the AcriSure Invitational in Palm Desert, Calif., beginning with a Thanksgiving Eve matchup with Stanford. That game will tip off at 8:30 p.m. CST, and will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
