Minnesota Set to Host Samford Monday Night

The Bulldogs and Gophers will face off for the first time in program history

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota women's basketball team (5-2, 0-0 Big Ten) returns to Williams Arena on Monday night to host the Samford Bulldogs (4-5, 0-0 SoCon). Tip off is set for 7 p.m. CT on B1G+ with Marisa Cate and Blythe Whealy. Fans can listen live on KFAN+ with Justin Gaard and Lynnette Sjoquist on the call.

  • Minnesota returns to Williams Arena after going 1-1 at the Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Hoops Championship last week.
  • After defeating South Florida, head coach Dawn Plitzuweit earned her 50th win, tying Ellen Mosher Hanson as the third-fastest head coach in program history to reach 50 career victories at Minnesota. She did so in 78 games.
  • The Gophers fell to Alabama on Wednesday, 63-58. Despite the loss, Grace Grocholski had 18 points, followed by Brylee Glenn's 13. Both Grocholski and Glenn scored in double figures in the last two games.
  • After pulling down 10 rebounds against South Florida, Sophie Hart recorded 11 against the Crimson Tide, tying her career high.
  • Minnesota ranks fourth in the nation and second in the Big Ten in assist-to-turnover ratio (124-68). The Gophers also rank No. 31 nationally and ninth in the conference in assists per game at 17.7. In addition, their defense ranks fifth in the NCAA and third in the conference in points allowed, giving up an average of 48.6.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
  • The Bulldogs are led by first-year head coach Matt Wise, who previously served as an assistant at Samford for three seasons.
  • The Bulldogs are paced by Briana Rivera, who is averaging 14.1 points per game. Rivera ranks first in the NCAA and the SoCon with 40 made 3-pointers. She is also second in the conference in total points with 127.
  • Emily Bowman was selected to the SoCon preseason team after averaging 9.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game last season and recording six double-doubles.
