The Golden Gophers pick up their first Big Ten road win of the season

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The University of Minnesota women's basketball team (10-3, 1-1 Big Ten) defeated the Indiana Hoosiers (11-3, 0-2 Big Ten) 71-48 at Assembly Hall on Monday evening. The win mark's Minnesota's largest road win in a conference game since defeating Wisconsin 78-50 on Jan. 17, 2019.

The Golden Gophers had two players score in double figures, led by Amaya Battle, who had 20 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Tori McKinney tacked on 17 points and two steals and Sophie Hart added nine points and 12 rebounds.

Minnesota pulled down 39 rebounds in Monday's game compared to Indiana's 25, led by Hart's 12 boards. The Gophers also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 18 rebounds into 19 second chance points.

The Minnesota defense held Indiana shooters to just 38.5 percent from the field. The Hoosiers did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only two offensive rebounds and scored zero second chance points while Minnesota pulled down 21 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

After falling behind 6-4, Minnesota went on a 5-0 run with 6:11 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from McKinney, to take a 9-6 lead. The Gophers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 18-13.

Minnesota then started off the second quarter by going on an 8-0 run to take a 21-18 lead. The Gophers proceeded to tack on three points to that lead and enjoyed a 34-28 advantage heading into halftime. Minnesota dominated in the paint, scoring 14 of its 21 points close to the basket.

Minnesota wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 17-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Finau Tonga, to expand its lead further to 51-28 with 1:35 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Hoosiers had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Gophers still entered the fourth quarter with a 51-33 edge. Minnesota played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 17 points in the paint.

Minnesota kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Tonga's jumper, to grow the lead to 61-39 with 5:52 to go in the contest. The Gophers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 71-48 win. Minnesota took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 20 points in the paint.
