MINNEAPOLIS — Jamie Nelson of the No. 3-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team has been named the WCHA Forward of the Month for December, the league announced Wednesday. The honor marks the first monthly conference award of Nelson's career.
A graduate transfer from Andover, Minn., Nelson delivered a strong performance in Minnesota's two December contests, recording four points (one goal, three assists) in a home-and-home sweep of St. Thomas. She was also previously named WCHA Forward of the Week for her efforts against the Tommies.
Nelson opened the weekend with a primary assist on Minnesota's final goal in Friday's 5–3 victory at the newly opened Lee & Penny Anderson Arena in St. Paul.
She continued her standout play Saturday at Ridder Arena, tallying a goal and two assists. Nelson recorded the primary assist on the game's opening goal, added a secondary assist on Minnesota's third tally, and capped the scoring with the Gophers' final goal in a 4–1 win.
Nelson becomes the fifth Gopher to earn WCHA Monthly honors this season, joining Abbey Murphy (September), Bella Fanale (September), Sydney Morrow (September), and Hannah Clark (October).
Minnesota wrapped up the first half of the season with a 14-4-0 overall record and a 10-4-0 mark in WCHA play. The Gophers return to action Jan. 2–3 with a two-game road series at Sacred Heart (5-12-1) in Fairfield, Conn., with puck drop set for 4:00 p.m. CT on Friday and 12:00 p.m. CT on Saturday.
