Gophers Rally, but Fall Short vs. Washington

2/1/2025 2:06:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Dawson Garcia scored 28 points, including 23 of the Gophers' final 27 points, but Minnesota (11-11, 3-8 Big Ten) dropped a 71-68 decision to Washington (11-10, 2-8 B1G) before a crowd of 9,202 at Williams Arena. The Gophers, who trailed by 10 points at halftime, rallied to take a one-point lead with 8:13 left and the score was tied with 2:44 remaining, but the Huskies held on for the win.

Garcia's 28-point game extended his streak of 20-point games to seven in a row, which is the longest by a Minnesota player since Kris Humphries had an eight-game streak during 2003-04. Garcia wound up 9-of-12 from the field, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, and 8-of-12 at the free throw line, while adding four rebounds, four assists, and a blocked shot in 30 minutes. Femi Odukale added 10 points, five assists, four rebounds, three steals, and two blocks for the Gophers. Isaac Asuma added eight points, Frank Mitchell had six points and a team-high seven rebounds, and Lu'Cye Patterson finished with five points, four boards, four assists, three steals, and a block.

Minnesota made 23-of-44 (.523) field goals, including 6-of-16 (.375) three-pointers, and 16-of-24 (.667) free throws, but were outrebounded, 33-25. Washington, which won its first game at Williams Arena since a 55-51 win here in December 1951, was led by 23 points from Tyler Harris and 16 points and 10 rebounds from Great Osobor. The Huskies were 23-of-55 (.418) from the field, including 7-of-15 (.467) from three-point range, and they helped secure the win by going 18-of-21 (.857) at the charity stripe.

Minnesota opened the game with a 9-3 run, with Garcia scoring the first five points, and led 11-5 after making its first five field goal attempts. The Huskies pulled within one with a 5-0 run, but Odukale knocked down a three-pointer from the top of the key for a 14-10 lead at the first media timeout. Washington used another 5-0 run to take its first lead at 15-14, before Mitchell scored on a layup, but the Huskies extended the lead to 22-16 with 10:28 left in the half. Three-point plays from Mitchell and Asuma tied the score with 8:57 remaining, and a free throw by Asuma made it a 7-0 run for the Gophers to retake the lead. UW responded with a 9-0 run to pull in front, 31-23, before two free throws from Asuma cut the deficit to six points. The Huskies stretched the lead to 34-25, but Asuma's jumper in the paint and a deep three by Patterson with 2:33 left pulled Minnesota within four points and forced a UW timeout. Back-to-back three-pointers by the Huskies, making them 6-of-9 from beyond the arc, extended UW's lead to 40-30 at the half.

Asuma led Minnesota with eight first-half points, with Garcia, Odukale, and Mitchell all having five points. After opening the game 6-of-7, the Gophers ended the half at 11-of-24 (.458) from the field, including 3-of-9 from three-point range, and 5-of-6 at the free throw line. Washington had a commanding 20-8 rebounding advantage, including a 7-0 edge in offensive rebounds. The Huskies made 14-of-29 (.483) field goals, including 6-of-10 three-pointers, and 6-of-7 free throws. Harris led UW with 15 points at the break, and Osobor added eight.

An Odukale layup and a three-pointer by Mike Mitchell Jr. (5 points, 2 assists) pulled Minnesota within seven early in the second half, and a Parker Fox (4 points, 1 rebound, 1 block) layup and Patterson FT trimmed UW's lead to 44-38. Trailing by nine, Odukale hit a three and Garcia added a three-point play, but Mitchell was called for a technical foul after Garcia's layup and the Huskies converted two free throws to make the score 49-44. Garcia scored on a jumper to cut it to 51-46, added a pair of free throws, and then scored on a layup to pull the Gophers within one and force UW to call timeout with 8:44 left. Garcia went to the line and made two more free throws, making it 11-straight points from the senior, as the Gophers retook a 52-51 lead. A three-point play and a three-pointer put UW back in the lead, 57-52, but Garcia made it 14-straight to cut it to a two-point lead. Another three-point play by the Huskies stretched the lead to 60-55 with 6:25 remaining, but a Patterson FT and a pair at the line by Garcia cut it to 60-58. The Huskies pushed the lead back to four points, but a 5-2 Gophers run that included layups by Mitchell Jr. and Garcia pulled Minnesota within one at the final media timeout. Garcia made 1-of-2 at the line to tie the score at 64-all with 2:44 left, but the Huskies took a 67-64 lead with a free throw and a layup with 1:32 left. Washington had the ball with 0:27 left and leading by three, but a turnover gave Minnesota possession with 23.9 seconds on the clock, and Minnesota called a timeout. Garcia scored in the lane with 12.3 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 67-66, and the Gophers called another timeout. UW added two free throws with 9.7 seconds left, and Minnesota called its final timeout. Garcia received the inbounds pass and was fouled with 7.2 seconds left, but he missed both free throws, and the Huskies made a pair of free throws with 5.9 left. Garcia added a late dunk, but UW escaped with the win.

Minnesota travels to Penn State for a 6:00 p.m. CST tipoff on Tuesday, Feb. 4, on Big Ten Network.
