Nabwe was named the Big Ten's Field Athlete of the Week.
MINNEAPOLIS -- For a Big Ten leading third time this season University of Minnesota women's track and field redshirt sophomore Anthonett Nabwe has been named the Big Ten's Field Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced on Wednesday afternoon. Nabwe is the only female student-athlete to have earned a weekly distinction from the conference three different times this indoor season.
Nabwe claimed the University of Minnesota Classic weight throw and shot put wins, putting down a season-best performance in the weight throw of 23.21m (76-1 3/4). The toss for Nabwe catapulted her to the No. 2 spot nationally in the event and No. 1 in the Big Ten just three weeks before the indoor conference championships in Indianapolis.
The Jamestown, N.D., native is the only Big Ten thrower to be ranked inside the top eight in both the shot put and weight throw this season. She is also the only Big Ten thrower to eclipse 23 meters this season in the weight throw, and she has done it twice with both of those instances coming this past weekend. In the weight throw Nabwe has been perfect this year with six consecutive event wins and has a streak of seven straight regular season wins in the event going back to last season.
The Maroon and Gold next compete at the Windy City Invite, hosted by the University of Wisconsin, in Chicago. The meet will be contested from Fri., Feb. 14 until Sat., Feb. 15.
