Minnesota Falls to Louisville on Day of the Joan Joyce Classic

BOCA RATON, Fla --The Minnesota Golden Gophers (1-5, 0-0 B1G) got a boost from senior Nani Valencia, who strung together three hits in a 5-1 loss to the Louisville Cardinals (5-2, 0-0 ACC) Friday. Valencia has now hit safely in all 6 of Minnesota's games to start the season.

Junior Presley Hosick (1-2) started and took the loss in the circle for Minnesota. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up five runs, two earned, on eight hits, allowing three walks and striking out three.

Valencia's three-hit day led the Gophers offensively. Senior Taylor Krapf put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk. Junior Sydney Schwartz also helped out for Minnesota, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 3-0, the 'U' first put runs on the board in the third inning. Minnesota got an RBI single from Schwartz, scoring Krapf from third base. The Gophers were unable to get any closer, as Louisville added two runs to their tally on the way to a 5-1 final.

GAME NOTES

» Valencia led the Gophers, compiling three base hits in the ballgame.
» Minnesota's power output was led by Krapf, who compiled two extra base hits in the ballgame.
» Minnesota's highest scoring inning was the third, when it pushed one run across.
» The 'U' left 10 runners stranded on base in the loss.
» The Gophers out-hit the Cardinals at a 10-8 clip.
» Minnesota went 3-for-8 (.375) with runners in scoring position.
» The Maroon and Gold pitchers limited Louisville to just 1-for-8 (.125) with runners in scoring position.
» Minnesota pitchers faced 33 Louisville hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and eight fly balls while striking out three.
» Louisville was led offensively by junior Chelsea Mack, who went 3-for-3 with an RBI.
» Sophomore Brooke Gray led the Cardinals pitching staff, throwing 4.2 shutout innings.

UP NEXT

The 'U' will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 8AM CT. The Gophers will take on Louisville again and then will face Villanova at 10:15 AM CT to finish their day on the diamond.
