Gophers Fall Twice on Day 2 of the Mary Nutter Classic

GAME 1 | No. 11 Duke 2, Minnesota 0

CATHEDRAL CITY, Cali --Senior Dani Drogemuller and Junior Cassidy Curd combined to toss a shutout on Saturday as the No. 11 Duke Blue Devils (12-3, 0-0 ACC) blanked the Minnesota Golden Gophers (4-8, 0-0 B1G) 2-0.

Junior Sydney Schwartz (1-5) started and took the loss in the circle for Minnesota. The right-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on seven hits, allowing no walks and striking out four.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Minnesota managed zero chances with runners on third in the shutout, going a total of 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position. The Gophers last got a runner on third in the first, when senior Margaret Tobias made it 60 feet away from scoring with one out.

GAME NOTES

» Minnesota pitchers faced 24 Duke hitters in the game, allowing seven ground balls and five fly balls while striking out four.
» Senior Nani Valencia led the Gophers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double.
» Duke was led offensively by sophomore Amiah Burgess, who went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
» Drogemuller led the Blue Devils pitching staff, throwing five shutout innings.

GAME 2 | No. 5 Tennessee 9, Minnesota 1

CATHEDRAL CITY, Cali --The Minnesota Golden Gophers (4-9,0-0 B1G) had a tough showing on Saturday, falling to the No. 5 Tennessee Volunteers (13-3, 0-0 SEC) by final score of 9-1.

Junior Hosick (2-3) got the ball to start for Minnesota and took the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Gophers were trailing 6-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Senior Kayla Chavez came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minnesota and get them on the board. The Gophers were unable to get any closer, as Tennessee added three runs to their tally on the way to a 9-1 final.

GAME NOTES

» Minnesota's highest scoring inning was the fourth, when it pushed one run across.
» Minnesota pitchers faced 30 Tennessee hitters in the game, allowing five ground balls and three fly balls while striking out four.
» Junior Breezy Burnett led the 'U' at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a double.
» Tennessee was led offensively by sophomore Taylor Pannell, who went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and three RBI.
» Junior Karlyn Pickens led the Volunteers pitching staff, throwing five innings of one-run ball.


UP NEXT

The 'U' will be back in action tomorrow. They will take Long Beach State at 11:30 AM CT. This will be the last game for the Gophers as part of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. This game will be broadcasted live on FloCollege tomorrow as well.
