MINNEAPOLIS -- In the final competition ahead of the 2025 Big Ten Championships, Minnesota's Tyler Wells won his pool at the Patriots Last Chance Open Sunday in Fairfax, Va.

One of five Gophers in action on the campus of George Mason University, Wells went 2-0 to win Pool B at 133 pounds. The No. 19 ranked wrestler in the country by InterMat, Wells opened with a 2-1 overtime win over Lehigh's Matty Lopes then topped Hofstra's Gauge Shipp, 8-2, to claim the title. Wells had a first-period takedown over Shipp to lead 3-1. Starting the second period on top, Wells turned Shipp over for four nearfall points to provide the winning cushion.

Three Gopher wrestlers finished second in their respective pools.

At 149 pounds, Drew Roberts was a finalist in Pool A. Ranked 29th nationally, he posted tech falls in the opening rounds, including a 19-3 win in the first period over American's Mikey Glynos. Roberts' loss in the finals came to Jaxon Joy, who was representing Spartan Combat RTC.

True freshman Charlie Millard competed for the first time since the Cyclone Open in mid-January. Competing in Pool A at 157 pounds, Millard opened with a pair of tech falls, including a 20-4 win at 6:11 against Lock Haven's Eric Alderfer. In the finals, Millard faced No. 9 Trevor Chumbley of Northwestern. Chumbley led 4-0 after the first two periods, but Millard opened the third-period scoring with a takedown of his own to cut the lead to 4-3. Chumbley escaped to make it 5-3 then was called twice for stalling to even the match at 5-5, but Chumbley prevailed on riding time, 6-5. It was just Millard's second loss of the season, making him 13-2 on the year.

Redshirt freshman Ethan Riddle also reached the finals to face a ranked opponent. He breezed through the opening rounds of Pool A at 174 pounds, scoring tech falls over James Lledo of Lock Haven (15-0, 1:41) and Riley Hackworth of George Mason (17-1, 5:00). In the finals, Riddle faced No. 20 Lennox Wolmak. The pair had met in the season-opening Mountaineer Invite where Wolmak pinned Riddle at 4:04. Sunday was much tighter, though Wolmak still emerged with a 7-6 decision. Down 3-0, Riddle escaped and got a takedown to led 4-3 after the first period. He sandwiched escapes around another Wolmak takedown, sending the match to the third period even at 6-6. Wolmak's escape at 1:56 proved to be the difference.

At heavyweight, redshirt junior Bennett Tabor finished in fifth place with all three of his matches being decided by fall. After an opening round loss to Cash Henderson of Spartan Combat RTC, Tabor bounced back in the consolation bracket with pins over Ean Winchester of George Mason (6:51) and Brenan Morgan of Virginia (1:14).
