MINNEAPOLIS - For the second consecutive month, a pair of monthly conference awards go to student-athletes in Dinkytown. Redshirt-senior forward Abbey Murphy and junior defender Sydney Morrow were named WCHA Forward of the Month and WCHA Defender of the Month, respectively, for the month of January, the conference announced on Wednesday.
In December, Murphy and freshman defender Chloe Primerano became the first pair of Gophers this season to earn WCHA monthly honors.
Murphy's second WCHA Forward of the Month of the season, the fifth of her career, comes after she led Minnesota in points (18 total, 8g-10a) and recorded a plus/minus of 11 throughout Minnesota's ten games in January. The Evergreen Park, Ill. native registered at least one point in all but two games during the month, including six multi-point games. She also tallied two game-winning goals, a power play goal, and a short-handed goal. Murphy was previously named WCHA Forward of the Week on Nov. 18 and Dec. 9 and to the Preseason All-WCHA Team prior to the start of the season.
Morrow clinched the first WCHA Defender of the Month honor of her career after co-leading Minnesota defenders in points (9), goals (4), and assists (5), and recording a plus/minus of ten in January. The Darien, Conn. native led the team in power play goals (2) throughout the month as well, and scored the game-winning goal against St. Thomas on Jan. 11. She was previously named WCHA Defender of the Week on Jan. 6 after a four point performance (3g-1a) during the East/West Showcase.
